GERALD (GERRY) DYCK
Date of Passing: Jul 24, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGERALD (GERRY) DYCK Gerald (Gerry) Edward Dyck was unexpectedly taken from us on July 24, 2013 at the age of 58. Gerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife Susan (nee Laudin) of 35 years, his mother Anne, children Cori (Don) Narine, Eric (Sandra) Dyck, Carlee (Daniel) Rempel and his grandchildren Ethan, Evan and Jaden Narine; Jacob, Levi and Rylee Dyck; sisters Edith (Peter) Thiessen and Kathy (Lee) Gregory. His loss will be deeply felt by many extended family members (especially the 'in-laws'), his church family, numerous friends and his farming community. Gerry was predeceased by his father Jacob J. Dyck and his father-in-law Alfons Laudin. Gerry was born in Winnipeg and grew up on the family farm near Springstein where he spent 54 years in the same house. His love of family, including his extended family, was evident to all who knew him. Gerry took great pride in his children and grandchildren, and never missed an opportunity for freezy time in the shop. Second to his love of family was farming. Gerry started farming alongside his dad with open cab tractors, mixed grain and livestock. Over the years the farm grew, eventually incorporating with his son and daughter-in-law in 2008. The farm currently includes air-conditioned, auto-steer (GPS) machinery, omega-3 eggs, leafcutter bees, traditional grains and specialty crops, with ongoing plans. He was proud that the farm he grew up on would continue on with a fourth generation. Although he would never admit it, Gerry had a creative streak as many homes have been graced by his work, including metal candle-holders, blanket boxes for his children and a cradle for his grandchildren. His other interests included scuba diving, co-piloting, travelling to a wide variety of destinations and experiencing local culture, collecting firearms and competitive shooting - until he traded them in to start his horse collection. Gerry's shop was a meeting place for many and world problems would be solved by his regulars (or so they thought). The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support we have felt through this difficult time. A special thanks to Bev Z. A funeral service will be held August 1, 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St. If friends so desire, donations in Gerry's memory may be made to Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

We were so saddened and shocked by the news of Gerry's sudden passing. He always took the time at family gatherings to speak, joke, nudge or get a smile out of you and continued with my boys. He had a wonderful spirit and was an inspiring person and touched many people. The tribute to him at the funeral was beautiful and the kids clearly loved, respected and admired him. My heartfelt condolences go out to Susan, the kids, grandkids, Tante Anne, Cathy and Edith along with their families. much love Marlies (Paul, Jack and Benjamin) - Posted by: Marlies Schlichting (Cousin) on: Aug 07, 2013

I have many great memories of uncle Gerry when we came to visit on the farm. Picking eggs, moving bee hives, the epic snow forts he would build in the yard. Sometimes intimidating, but always loving. Someone I will always look up to. Sorry for running over your mail box with the Sno-Scoot ;-) Cheers uncle Ger! Rest in peace - Posted by: Rob Thiessen (Nephew) on: Aug 02, 2013

I have known Gerry for over 25 years and he was always friendly and welcoming. Amongst our work discussions we always shared a joke or two and stories about family, travel and diving. He was a source of inspiration for new destinations to put on my travel wish list. Always an innovator, Gerry most recently approached me to collaborate on a field trial this summer. During project discussions I had the opportunity for a very nice visit at his farm and we shared a few laughs over my first quad driving experience there. I am shocked and saddened by Gerry's sudden passing and send my condolences to the entire family. With sympathy, Delia Petrash. - Posted by: Delia Petrash (work associate, Manitoba Egg Farmers) on: Aug 01, 2013

Jerry was one of the first people to officially welcome me to the family. Long before I even met my future mother-in-law and father-in-law, there was Jerry. He sat me down at that table on the family farm, on that first visit with Rachel's family, and thoroughly interrogated me. As the years went by, I realized there was no better way I could have been welcomed to the family. That first, slightly uncomfortable christmas? There was Jerry, clapping me on the shoulder and saying, "you sing, right? Why don't you start us off?" From then on, every visit started with Jerry asking me how life was going, how work was going, and no matter how boring or mundane I thought my life wss, he always wanted to hear about it. When my son was born, he always took the time to engage with him. I hope he knew how much it meant to me, how much a part of the family he always made me feel. Thank you, Uncle Jerry. - Posted by: Nick Martens (family) on: Jul 31, 2013

My thoughts and prayers are with Susan and family. It is sometimes difficult to make sense of why God does what He does. Take comfort in knowing that He will give you the strength to get through the difficult days ahead. One of my memories with Gerry happened when we where young boys. Jerry was at my house one morning and we were to get ready to go somewhere special. Jerry had a new tie with a plastic hook on the back and two tabs sticking out the sides. We could not figure out what to do with these dumb tabs that were sticking out the side so with no adults around we cut them off. We solved the problem or so we thought until Aunt Ann showed her displeasure. Gerry will be missed by all who knew him. If his bright smile didn't brighten your day, nothing would. - Posted by: Martin Borne (Cousin) on: Jul 31, 2013

On our journey from BC to the Maritimes we stopped to see Gerry & Susan and were treated to a really nice afternoon. Gerry had a great sense of humour and he entertained us with some stories of our younger years. Before leaving Gerry presented us with a dozen double yoke eggs which we thought was really special. You will always be remembered. Our condolences to Susan and the family. - Posted by: Rudy Harder (cousin) on: Jul 31, 2013

Our lives have crossed in so many ways. We share a farm background. Our daughters attended high school together. I went to University with sister Kathy, and would call Lee a farming friend as well. And son Erik, another farming friend. On and on. Each of these connections will trigger a fond memory. Every time we met, that big smile and friendly greeting, and honest caring for other people. - Posted by: Gerald and Margo, and family (friends) on: Jul 31, 2013

My condolences to Gerry's family and all who loved him. His obituary showed how loved he is. He has left behind a legacy of wonderful memories. Although I haven't seen him since we were children I certainly connected once again. - Posted by: Barb McLean (Harder) (cousin) on: Jul 30, 2013

Our deepest sympathy to the family. Growing up in Springstein in the 50's, 60's, and 70's meant everyone knew each other. The church, the school, and Harder's store were the meeting places of the era. I had to smile when reading the part in the funeral announcement about the more recent meeting place being Gerry's shop where world problems were still being discussed and potentially solved. Over the years some of the players have changed as well as the topics discussed but I can only imagine Gerry was still taking a leadership role in the debates. He will be missed. - Posted by: Doug and Diana Dueck (Friend) on: Jul 30, 2013

We stopped at Gerry's farm several years ago while passing by. Although we had not seen each other for about 50 years he recognized me immediately and greeted me by Family name as soon as he saw me. We shared a nice visit before we continued on our way. I'm sure you will be missed by many. - Posted by: Neil Isaak (friend, former neighbour) on: Jul 30, 2013
