ROBERT ALLEN MILLS 1927 - 2013 Peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Concordia Hospital, Robert Mills passed away at the age of 86 years, with family at his side. He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Annie, of 63 years, son Ken (Tina), and son Ray (Karen). He also leaves to mourn his grandchildren Meghan, Evan and Justin, sister Patricia (Robert) Linney, sister Judith (Wayne) Wright, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Special thanks to Helen and Keith for their love and support. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Tilda Mills. Bob was born on April 14, 1927 in Ray, North Dakota, and was raised and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1943 he began his career at C.N.R. at the age of 16 years as an Apprentice Carman. During his apprenticeship, he began serving in the US Navy on the USS Belleau Wood during the Second World War, stationed in the Pacific. After the war, Bob began corresponding with a young woman by the name of Annie McAllister. They were married on May 23, 1950, during the 1950 Winnipeg flood. In 1968, Bob and Anne purchased an island on Pelican Pouch Lake in Ontario, where they built the family cottage and established a lifelong legacy. The island is special for the entire family with a lot of wonderful memories. Bob had a sparkle in his eye each time he was there. Bob loved the outdoors including camping, boating, fishing and building everything from furniture to the cottage, and passed these interests and skills onto his sons. Bob "Red" retired from C.N.R. in 1986, after 43 years of service, as the General Car Foreman in the Transcona Car Shop, where he established many friendships. At 63 years of age, Bob suffered a stroke. With the sheer determination and positive attitude that he was known for, he overcame this setback and was able to travel widely across Canada and the United States. A memorial service to celebrate Bob's life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. Interment and reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Glen Eden Funeral Home (204) 338-7111

  • OUR "UNCLE BOB"..A lifetime of memories for all of "us" who were shown, by example, how to bite into life and live it to a Gold Standard! Family above all was the first lesson. Respect, honour, diligence, unconditional love, joy, empathy and other gold plated personal traits were the bricks that built our "Uncle Bob". Nothing but the fondest memories remain for a remarkable man who was forged in remarkably difficult times. His presence will be forever missed by our family but we know he is still here in his family who carry all that forward. It is just goodbye for now, see you later. - Posted by: Dave and Pat Dalke (Nephew) on: Aug 03, 2013

  • Red got me started in my career as a supervisor at CN. I remember him as being "rough around the edges" which put a little fear in me but once I got to know him I discovered that he was a great person and he genuinely cared about me and how my life was going. I learned a lot from Red. Thanks for having faith in me way back then. I never forgot about you and will always have fond memories of you. Ray, I hope the memories and some of the stories you have and will hear about your Dad will give you and your family some comfort. He was truly a wonderful person. - Posted by: Ross Shaw (Friend) on: Aug 02, 2013

  • Bob and Anne were neighbours for 16 years but more importantly became cherished friends to this day. My husband and I, son, daughter along with the family dog, named "Blue" have treasured memories of times spent with them at their family cottage on Pelican Lake. We also have fond memories of family gatherings, wood working with Bob and just visiting together. Bob may be gone from our sight but I will always see his smiling eyes and hear his infectious chuckle when I think of him. Though there are some tears the memories make my heart smile and I feel blessed to have known him. To Anne, Ken, Ray and family, "May your heart find healing in cherished memories, May your spirit find comfort in the thoughts and prayers of those who care about you." To Bob/ Mr Mills, you are fondly remembered by Janice, Lloyd, Mark and Jennifer - Posted by: Janice & Lloyd Tokle (Neighbours for 16 yrs. & Friends) on: Aug 02, 2013
