JOAN NORQUAY (nee VAN HELLEMOND) October 1, 1937 - August 11, 2013 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Joan Norquay on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at Riverview Palliative Care Unit. Left to cherish Mom's memory are her children Sharon, Jim, Linda and Donna (Dan); and grandchildren Lisa, Nicole, Ryan and Brock. Mom is also survived by her brothers Jack, Andy and Bruce Van Hellemond, their spouses and her nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in Mom's heart. Mom was predeceased by her husband Wally in 2006 after 48 years of marriage. While that was a difficult time, Mom took it all in stride and made certain to make every moment count. She enjoyed annual trips to see Jim at his home in California and Donna and Dan in Whitehorse. She also cruised and travelled the east coast with Sharon and Lisa and just this past New Years had a great week in Mexico with Linda and her kids. Mom enjoyed being busy and socializing. She was a life time member of the Thistle Curling Club, a member of both the St. James Legion #4 and ANAF #283 where she enjoyed playing crib, was President of the Sinawik Bay social club and volunteered weekly at the Just Like New To You thrift store. Since her cancer diagnosis in February, Mom felt even more blessed and appreciative of her visits with friends and family. It meant so much to her to have so many out of town visitors. Mom wanted to remain in her home for as long as possible and was successful in doing so until 29 hours before she passed because she was surrounded by her amazing neighbors at the Kiwanis Villa. Their assistance to Mom was invaluable and provided her children with the comfort of knowing that Mom was being looked after when they were not able to be there. Thanks to you all. The family would also like to thank the Palliative home care support team and nursing staff that helped Mom remain at home as long as she did and the Riverview Palliative staff who were so attentive and compassionate during her short stay. Your kindness will not be forgotten. A celebration of Mom's life will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. "We will miss you Mom. Thanks for everything." For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I am so sorry to hear the news of Mrs. Norquay's passing. I will never forget being in your midst...and you always seemed to give a damn... whether it was enjoying a log fire out at Blue Lake, being a beneficiary of that caring spirit when Jim and I were playing hockey together, or feeling so welcome in your home after an evening of refereeing, or perhaps even enjoying a friendly chat over at the legion as you played crib with my folks. In a world of many people trying to be something they aren't, you were busy being the best YOU you could be... simplicity taken to the maximum - and a warm smile to always go with it...and it looked so good on you! • I am so sorry to hear of your loss, just today I was talking to Kay the other week at Church, she was telling me how much fun you all had on the South Beach trip. I sure wish I had not put off coming back to see you. People say that you should never put off till tomorrow what you can do today. I will never forgive myself. R.I.P. my new and dear friend, I will miss you - Posted by: Charlotte Banks (Friend) on: Sep 01, 2013
