LAWRENCE (LARRY) HAAG It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear husband and father, Lawrence (Larry) Haag, who after a courageous battle and surrounded by the love of his family, died peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital on Monday, August 12, 2013. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 38 years, Denise and his two sons Kevin and Patrick, along with his sisters Mary (David), Bev (Paul), Carol (Vic), Lucy (Wes) and brother Ken (Linda) along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Larry was born on August 8, 1940 in Winnipeg, but spent his early years growing up in Atikokan, Ont. He developed a wander lust quite early and travelled throughout Canada but always came back to Winnipeg where he has lived and worked for the last 26 years. He retired from the Federal Government in 2000 after 31 years. Over the years, Larry had many interests and hobbies, ranging from collecting breweriana to researching genealogy. After his retirement he developed an avid interest in Metis history that led him to participating in the building and driving of Red River carts that were taken on a trail ride called "Back to Batoche" in 2005. He also authored many articles for the "Buffalo Trails and Tales" newsletter and is co-author of the published book The Boundary Commission's Metis Scouts: The 49th Rangers". We wish to thank the medical staff on the 4th floor at Victoria General Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. At Larry's request cremation and a private family interment will take place. A celebration of Larry's life will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at 1:30 pm at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I met and visited with Larry while at the Dakota Chapter breweriana shows in Watertown, South Dakota, as we both belonged to that Chapter of BCCA. Although it was long ago, 1990-1993, I remember him well and was impressed by his interest to travel from Canada to these buy-sell-trade shows. I am the Dakota Chapter Secretary-Treasurer. While updating the "All-Time" membership database, I came across his obituary. Rest in peace, Larry. - Don Wallace, South Dakota. - Posted by: Don Wallace (Friend) on: Jan 14, 2022

  • We met Larry in 1963 when we came to Winnipeg. Over the years we came to appreciate his caring and sharing. He always offered a sholder to cry on or a pat on the back when you did well. A true friend indeed. From out hearts to yours Denise, Kevin and Patrick... God be with you. - Posted by: Bill & Clara Jeffrey (Friends) on: Sep 11, 2013

  • Denise, Kevin & Patrick, you have my sincerest condolences for the loss of your husband and father. I met Larry almost 40 years ago, and while I hadn't see him again until recently, age hadn't diminished his hearty laugh or dampened his interest in learning. I know he will be missed by so many people. - Posted by: Catherine Whitfield (friend) on: Aug 20, 2013

  • A man that stood tall. He loved his wife and children. He was very proud of being Metis and taught me so much about who we were and who our family was/is. I grew to know him through genealogy and history. And when I was a kid, I remember he was always laughing or smiling. Denise, Kevin and Patrick, cherish his memory and know that he was a man well liked. My prayers are with you. May the Creator guide your footsteps as you walk this path to healing. Walk tall and stay strong. - Posted by: Doris Grouette (First cousin once removed (Annette Grouette's daughter)) on: Aug 19, 2013
