ALEXANDER MACKIE SHEPHERD May 20, 1932 - August 13, 2013 Alex passed away peacefully the evening of August 13, 2013 from cancer with his family by his side. Predeceased in death by his wife Isobel of 32 years, he is survived by his wife of 19 years Lorraine Moniot, his children Susan (Charlie), Robin (Angela), Ian (Sally) and Stephanie (Damien); remembered with love by his grandchildren Sean (Rose), Andrew (Laura), Quinn, Sarah, Isobel, Julia and Alexie; and cherished great-granddaughter Kara. Alex is also survived by his mother-in-law Marcelle as well as Lorraine's four siblings and extended family. Alex grew up in Gorebridge, Scotland and joined the Royal Navy at 15 years old. He became a Navy Diver on the HMS Triumph, a fleet Aircraft Carrier and served in the Korean War. He immigrated to Canada in 1963 with his young family full of hope and aspiration. He worked in sales for his career and spent many years at Lipton prior to retiring at 62. Golf became his passion and he played every day for a number of years. He was extremely well read and had knowledge of history that would rival the best professors. Robert Burns was his favourite poet and we all grew up hearing his poems. He had integrity and bravery mixed with kindness, tolerance and humor that made him a true joy to be around. His favourite saying was "It is hard to be unhappy when you are grateful." We are all grateful for the years we had with such a wonderful man. Our family would like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital on 5E for the compassionate care they provided. As per Alex's wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. DESJARDINS 233-4949 desjardinsfuneralchapel.ca

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I am truly grateful to Alex, whom I never met, indeed was hoping to talk with him further since the wonderful letter he wrote me in March 2007. Alex and I shared the same grandmother, only to me she was a great grandmother, I am Alex's first cousin once removed. Alex said I have a "Kent face" in his first sentence to me. That meant the world to me. I always meant to get back to him, but such has been our journey here in New Zealand after the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch, that it didn't happen. Now I am so sorry to see of Alex's passing, leaving a huge gap for me. We will meet at last on the wonderful shores of heaven, sleep peacefully. - Posted by: Linda Margaret Mackie marieskind (Neice) on: Jun 10, 2017

  • You were a true gentleman Papa and you left an indelible mark on many lives including my own. It breaks my heart to see you go. - Posted by: Sean (Grandfather) on: Aug 23, 2013

  • Alex and I spent much time together growing up between the age of 10 and 16, then of course he left for the Royal Navy, and myself to the Royal Air Force. We both lived in Arniston Gorebridge and played football together. Sorry to hear the sad news, and send our condolences to all the family. • I always remember how soft spoken and dignified Alex was when I came over to play as a boy. I always thought Ian was very lucky to have such a cool Dad. May you rest in peace sir. Thoughts and prayers to all the family - Posted by: Glen Olmstead (friend of Alex's son Ian) on: Aug 17, 2013

  • A true honor it was to meet Alex. Enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit with him one evening at Ian's house. If memory serves, he did quite well with the literature questions. May you rest in peace Alex. - Posted by: Jim Bade (friend of his son Ian) on: Aug 17, 2013
