SYNTRA SOOKHAN (nee SUBEDAR) March 29, 1955 August 16, 2013 Our beloved Syntra took her final breath shortly after 7:00 a.m. on August 16 with family members at her bed side. She had spent her final few months at the Grace Hospital Hospice. Syntra immigrated to Canada from Trinidad with her parents and six of her seven siblings as a teenager. She completed her last year of high school in Cranberry Portage, Manitoba and enrolled at the University of Manitoba. There she met and married Sam. During the succeeding years she bore two beautiful daughters and entered the work force in Payroll and Accounting. She was highly regarded for her character, efficiency and work ethic by her employers first at Lamb Air and later, the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Syntra relocated to The Pas, Manitoba and assumed a similar role with Acklands Granger while raising her two young daughters as a single parent. She eventually returned to Winnipeg and re-entered university continuing to raise her family. Unfortunately, sudden illness prevented her from completing her program in Physiotherapy. Always a lover of life and never one to assume a defeatist attitude, she pulled up her boot straps and continued forward in time, by rejoining the workforce and simultaneously taking university and college courses with great success. Illness knocked at her door once again, however, and so she spent the next number of years at home; her final three and one-half years, living with cancer. Throughout her adult life, Syntra seized attention and gained respect and affection from virtually everyone she met. Her flamboyance, intelligence, infectious laugh, and huge heart made this unavoidable. Syntra's love for all her family was exceptional and unrestrained. She wore her badge as mother, grandma, daughter, sister, auntie proudly and filled each role responsibly and lovingly. She was particularly proud of raising her children and seeing them begin successful careers in education and law enforcement. Her love and dedication to them and to her grandchildren was endless. Although she will be greatly missed, Syntra will be forever loved and cherished by her surviving mother (Pearl), sister (Mary), brothers (Lindrum, Rajendra, Dyanand, Rabindranath, Rudranath, Ashoka), daughters (Vanessa/Jeff Luloff, and Shannon Neff), grandchildren (Shayla, Simon, Jaxon, Zenon) and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family. Syntra was predeceased by husband, Sam Sookhan and father, Mandath Subedar. Services will be held 10:00 a.m. at NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. Tuesday, August 20, 2013. The family wishes to thank CancerCare Manitoba as well as the staff at Riverview and the Grace Hospital Hospice for the care they provided Syntra. I am so sorry to learn that Syntra passed away so very soon after my dad. I enjoyed getting to know Syntra this summer and wish I had known her longer. I truly enjoyed our many conversations on the patio and I know she will be dearly missed by her family and friends. God Bless you Syntra! Until we meet again. - Posted by: Merle Desrosiers ((Daughter of Jim at the Hospice)) on: Oct 11, 2013
