Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES STEVEN SABO It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Charles Sabo, at his summer home in Grand Marais MB on Saturday, August 17, 2013. Chuck was born on July 9, 1930, in Winnipeg MB. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Trudy Sabo, his children; Jack (Karen), Randy (Irene), Charlene (Don,) and his grandchildren; Kelly, Andrew, Steven, Courtney, Craig and Lauren as well as longtime and special friends Wally and Dorothy Jones and Les Lycan. His school years included Hugh John McDonald and St. Paul's College, after school, Chuck worked for Molson Breweries from 1949 until 1970. From 1970 to 1984, Chuck and Trudy were the owner/operators of Transcona Bowling Lanes. Later Chuck managed a restaurant at Coronation Lanes until retirement. Chuck and Trudy were married on December 7, 1951. They spent summers in Grand Marais, with friends and family from 1959 to the present. They made several trips to Australia to visit their son and family. Chuck had always loved sports, which included hockey, lacrosse and tennis. He excelled at hockey and had a reputation as an old school hockey player, which earned him an opportunity to be invited to the Detroit Redwings camp in 1948, and later had two trips to Russia, with the old-timers hockey association. He also excelled at lacrosse. Chuck and his friend Wally were recognized as legends by the Grand Beach Association for originating horseshoe tournaments. Chuck also loved to play at the Grand Beach tennis courts. Chuck lived everyday of his life to the fullest. To all of the Sabo's and Sambrooke's we wanted you to know that we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We have so many amazing memories of good times out at the beach. Chuck and Trudy always made us feel welcome all the way from our knucklehead high school years right up until recent visits. The way he led his life is an inspiration to keeping the important things in life at the forefront. - Posted by: Ian and Judy Williams (Family friends) on: Aug 23, 2013

Condolences to the Sabo family. I knew Chuck in the late seventies when we played hockey together on the Transcona Centurions. There were a lot of 'characters' on that team, but none like Charlie!! Practical jokes in the dressing room, on the ice, and even in the shower! What a prankster! On the ice, it was great to see him flying down the wing, making his patented moves, usually with the puck ending up in the net. Yes, Chuck made those Friday nights at Roland Michener some of my most memorable. I think mates Frank T., Ernie R., Bob B., Wally S., Dougie and Donnie S., and all the rest would certainly agree. - Posted by: Dave Coffell (hockey teammate) on: Aug 23, 2013

Dear Auntie Trudy, Jack, Randy and Charlene, Though it has been years, I think of you often. We are all very sorry to hear of the passing of Uncle Charlie. As you know our Dad recently passed as well so we know how hard it is. We have many fond memories of our times together at the cottage and our visits when we came down from Red Lake. If you ever get out this way, please look us up. Mom and Lisa are in Calgary, Louis is in Vancouver and I'm in Qualicum Beach. Sincerely, Cousin Greg - Posted by: Sabo Family out west (Sister In-law, Niece, Nephews) on: Aug 23, 2013

I have just learned of Chuck's passing, and am saddened by your loss. It is over 70 yrs Gertie, since we first met and became close friends at Lord Roberts school. If memory serves me correctly, it was the August long weekend in 1948 at Grand Beach, when Chuck first told me he was going to marry you. How ironic! that for over 66 yrs Grand Beach has been such a focal point in your lives together. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Your 62 yr marriage, was no doubt full of great memories, which will help to sustain you in your grief and the difficult road ahead. What a legacy to leave for your children. Should you need a shoulder, I'm here for you. My thoughts are with you and your loved ones. Shirley (MacDonald) Douglas. Papa was such a dear man. His stories and antics never failed to make us laugh. Chuck and Trudy made us truly welcome when we joined in the festivities at the cabin. So many fond memories of Chuck greeting us with a sarcastic comment upon our arrival...it was expected. Jim often gleefully repeated Papa's stories and opinions to others after our weekends together. He was a good and kind soul. We are so sorry for your loss. With love, Diane and Jim McLeary - Posted by: Diane McLeary (Family friend) on: Aug 22, 2013

I first met Chuck when I brought my daughters Carol and Kathryn to bowl at Transcona Bowl. I eventually became one of the coaches for the YBC. I was lucky enough to be able to celebrate end of bowling season at Chuck and Trudy's cottage and still have fond memories. After not seeing them for a long time, I ran into Chuck and Trudy when they were working at Coronation Lanes and it was like old home week. Thanks for the memories. - Posted by: Marilyn McMullan (old friend ) on: Aug 21, 2013
