EDWARD (EDDY) JOSEPH ST. MARS September 4, 1928- August 29, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Edward (Eddy) St. Mars on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Grace Hospital, just six days away from his 85th birthday. He leaves to mourn his sister Louise Jubinville, one brother Louis (Agnes), sister-in-law Marguerite, his uncle Roger St Mars, as well as a special friend Betty Beitz. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Marie-Anne St Mars, brother Leo St Mars, brother-in-law Henri Jubinville. He worked at Greater Winnipeg Water District, Peter Leach Construction, Manitoba Sugar then created and managed successfully his own scoreboard company under E & J Enterprises in 1973 until his retirement. He was known for his love of sports and had many trophies to show. He was also recognized by the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. His football career lasted from 1952 1969. He played with the St. Boniface Legionnaires, St. James Rams, Elmwood Colts and St. Vital Bulldogs. In 1951 he won the Heavyweight Boxing Championship of Manitoba under the watchful eye of his trainer Gordon Mackie. After retirement he became an avid golfer and was proud of the trophy he got for "his hole in one" accomplishment. Eddy was a focused, strong willed, determined, independent and hardworking individual. His creative ability was evident in his scoreboard business, in electrical, mechanical and woodworking projects. He was proud of his sobriety and often sponsored others to help maintain theirs. His wit and sense of humour accompanied him to the end. He had a big heart and was always willing to help anyone. We often heard him say "Have no fear, Big Ed is here". The family wishes to thank everyone who helped make Ed's life comfortable and pleasant these past months. Special thanks to the caring and supportive staff at Charleswood Care Centre and the ICU at Grace Hospital. A special thank you to Ed's nephew Luc St. Mars who accepted responsibility to oversee Ed's well being and dedicated many hours doing so. Respecting Ed's wishes, there will be no viewing or service. Cremation has taken place. Private interment of Eddy's ashes will take place at a later date. If desired, donations in Ed's name may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, R3T 0R3. Good-bye (Big Ed). Forever in our hearts.
