DAGMAR WALLY URSULA KIRDIE (APEL) 1949 - 2013 After a brief battle with cancer, the Almighty took Dagmar into His House on September 1, 2013. Dagmar is survived by husband of 40 years, Tony, daughter Sabrina (Clayton) and grandson Chay, son Tristan (Tiphanie), sisters-in-law Donna and Olga (Art), niece Amanda, and many relatives in Germany, especially her cousin Bubbi (Hans Joachim Apel). Dagmar was predeceased by her father Arno Apel and her mother Isa Apel (Wiegand). The only child, Dagmar was born February 9, 1949 in Oberlind, Germany. With her parents, she immigrated to Canada in July of 1965. After formal education, Dagmar found her way to the University of Manitoba, ultimately working in the Dafoe Library. Here she met Tony and they married in 1972. She changed that man forever, and he gave in willingly. She bore him their pride and joy. She retired from the library in 2009. Her favourite pastime was an interest in Anime (Japanese animation) and reading Louis L'Amour and Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels. In her retirement, she was happiest in and around her home. She enjoyed visits with her children, grandson, her father and spending time with her friends and neighbours Carol and John and Terry. Her years at the library fostered many great friendships. Dagmar enjoyed early morning swimming with Pat, and going to Curves. Lunches on a regular basis with the diverse groups such as her "German Mafia", "Three Musketeers" and "former section" were the norm. Sweetheart, you will be sadly missed by your family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. P. G. Mehta, Dr. Wong and the wonderful staff of CancerCare Manitoba and Palliative Care. Cremation has taken place. A service will be held Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Pastor Peter Lurvey of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the charity of your choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I was so sad to learn of Dagmar's passing. She was a terrific employee and the best supervisor, trainer and cataloguer it has been my pleasure to know. There was no technical matter she could not explain and no person she could not teach! She made a real difference to the services we offered to students, faculty. - Posted by: Carolynne Presser (Former Director of Libraries, UM) on: Sep 16, 2013

  • Vivacious and spontaneous, Dagmar laughed hardest when the joke was on her. She was my friend from my first day on the job and past both of our retirements. We shared our mutual interest in comic art and cartoons from Day One. I can't believe she's gone. Our sympathies to all who knew and loved her. - Posted by: Murray Ward (Friend and library co-worker) on: Sep 15, 2013

  • It seems to me that Dagmar always had a smile on her face, even on those early mornings in the "cool" pool. She talked about her family often with great pride and treasured her time with her grandson. My heartfelt sympathy to all of you. - Posted by: Bev Henry (member of the morning aquasize group) on: Sep 10, 2013

  • I feel your pain and express deep sorrow. Hope you are doing well in this time of grief. Your old friend Doug Gray. - Posted by: Doug Gray (Friend) on: Sep 10, 2013

  • Dagmar was an amazing woman. I loved her outgoing personality and sense of fun. When I taught in the Library and Information Technology Program at Red River College, it was always with confidence that we sent students on field placement at Technical Services. We knew that they would be taken under Dagmar's wing and would benefit from her incredible wealth of knowledge. My sincere condolences go out to her family. - Posted by: Pat Routledge (Former U of M colleague) on: Sep 07, 2013
