JOHN MCCRAE After a lengthy battle with cancer, John Alexander McCrae passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the Seven Regions Health Centre, Gladstone at the age of 87 years. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Mona; his parents Cliff and Corinne McCrae; his sister Carol; brothers Murdock and Robert. He is survived by sisters Pat Fleming of The Pas, Janet Constable of Winnipeg and brother Stewart of Calgary; sister-in-law Doreen McCrae and brother-in-law Marlin Whitcher; several nieces and nephews. John and Mona farmed for many years in Gladstone. He was always active in the community as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and The Elks. He spent many years coaching boys baseball, curling, golfing, and working at the Agriculture Fair & Sports Days. He and Mona formed a riding club and enjoyed the many trails they followed on horseback. John was an avid bridge player and up until a few days before his death was still participating in this activity. During the winter of 1976 John and Mona headed south and thus began 26 wonderful winters in Texas. In the early days they spent part of each week helping Mexican children learn to read. During the summer months they travelled to the Okanagan Valley, where they found great pleasure in picking fruit and sharing their labours with friends and family. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gladstone Cemetery, followed by lunch at the Gladstone United Church. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Seven Regions Health Centre; to the many friends who continued to visit and care for him throughout his illness, and particularly to Donna Rink for her compassion and thoughtfulness.
