Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWOLF DIETMAR HEMPEL June 11, 1931 - September 10, 2013 After a lengthy illness, Dietmar Hempel was released from his suffering into the arms of Jesus. The first son of Wilhelm and Erna Hempel, he escaped from East Germany in 1951 and immigrated to Canada in 1957. He married in 1965 and was an active father in the lives of his two children. As a renaissance man, he was always learning and passing on the knowledge from his life experiences and journeys. In his final days he shared that his earthly voyage was reaching its destination and that he was ready for his heavenly crossing. He is mourned by his wife, daughter, son and their families, as well as his siblings and their families. I met Diet through work many years ago and got to know him on a personal level, both as a mentor and a great Polymath. He exemplified one of the rarest breeds of a human being which our today’s world desperately needs. Diet was always in pursuit of new knowledge, challenges, and adventures; willingly sharing it with his peers in his unique exuberant manner. This quote from Robert A. Heinlein best exemplifies how I came to experience and understand Diet’s viewpoints and philosophy in life. "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." I would be remiss if I didn’t also acknowledge Diet’s religious faith which he maintained as an underlying foundation to his beliefs. Even in our last and most recent conversation, Diet stood steadfast in all ways that I had come to know him those many years ago. On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolence to Trudy, Anita, Ron and their families. May God comfort you in your loss and in the days ahead. - Posted by: Bruno Malbasa and Family (Former Colleague & Friend) on: Sep 15, 2013
