RICHARD ALAN MILLIKEN 1947-2013 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Richard Alan Milliken (Rick) on September 11, 2013. Rick passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre while surrounded by the loves of his life Donna, Hayley, Graham and Melissa. Dad was born on March 26, 1947 in Regina, Saskatchewan to William and Eleanor Milliken (nee Stevens) Growing up dad and his family lived throughout Western Canada, eventually settling in Winnipeg for the remainder of his life. Rick and Donna met through family friends, and immediately hit it off. They would soon be married and spend the next 40 years together. In that time, mom, Graham and Hayley would rely on dad through thick and thin, dad always making things better. As our dad, he was not only our confidante, but our best friend. His uniqueness combined with his sense of adventure made for never a dull moment. Over the years, dad always put family first. Dad shared a beautiful relationship with Hayley, one of the few people who could match his wit. He was a part of all aspects of our lives, never ever letting us down. His life with mum could not have been more perfect. He loved mum with all his heart. Their years together included travels to Mexico, Thailand, camping across Canada and many, many days at the cabin in Redditt, Ontario. At the cabin, dad and mum were at their happiest. Dad built things, while mum would find his missing tools. So many friends and family spent time at the cabin, all were treated to the same hilarity which was our dad. Dad would mostly spend his years at the cabin taking care of mum, making her laugh and providing such great companionship. Finally, as the Milliken family grew to include Melissa and his beloved granddaughter Clare, dad would tell me that his life was complete. He loved Melissa like a daughter and repeatedly thanked her for "fixin' his boy'. Every visit with Clare made him smile. Dad lived for a Clare hug and kiss; he never let her leave the room without telling her that he loved her. Flynn James, our son also left us too soon this year, however he did have the joy of being held by dad. This was a special moment. Dad will sorely be missed by many, many friends and family. He is survived by his father William, brother Bob (Skip) both whom he had great love and respect for. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). We love you Dad. • I worked with Rick for about 30 years, however it wasn’t until the past few years that I really got to know him. We worked different shifts at Greyhound, but since retirement we found the time to enjoy each other’s company. I came to respect and admire his sense of humor and his dedication to his family. Rick was always there as a great friend at work and I will miss our breakfast get-togethers. Rick had a strong commitment to his family and friends, and he will be missed by many. With deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Maury St Jean (Friend) on: Sep 21, 2013

  • What luck, to have been included in the Millikens' family friend circle. Rick was a constant beacon of warmth, humour and kindness, at the centre of their beautiful, lovely family. Always busy with projects, he made you feel completely welcome and included at any gathering; He had a knack for sharing his immense wealth... made us home-made dollar chips when I first met him as kid, and never stopped giving - as a friend to first my sister, and then everyone in my family. Rick was always interested in what you had to say, and gave his undivided attention, even if what came out of your mouth was total nonsense. That is a true gift. Love to you - Donna & Hayley, Graham, Melissa and Clare. Rick will be remembered forever in our hearts. - Love ... • Rick was the best sort of man: the kind of person who cared deeply about his family, his friends, and his fellow workers, usually putting their needs ahead of his own. So many people loved him, and considered him to be their best friend. I am honoured to have known him, and to have my daughter call him her uncle. He touched our lives, and we will never forget him.
