ALICE HURD (VEALS) 1921-2013
Born: Jul 25, 1921
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALICE HURD (nee VEALS) 1921-2013 Alice Hurd passed away peacefully at the age of 92 at the Riverview Health Centre on Monday, September 9, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband Don Winkler Hurd (1926-2003) and her brother Billy Veals (1918-1941). She is survived by her cousins Barry Veals (Gale), Barb Mclean (Neil), special friends Andy Tallin (Concha), Jeff Tallin (Shelley) and Chris Tallin and their children. Alice was born to Beatrice and Harry Rees Veals on July 25, 1921 in Darlingford, Manitoba, where her father operated the general store. Alice and her family moved to Winnipeg in 1944 after her father sold the store. She completed her education at Riverbend School, a finishing school for girls. She was employed for about a year with Ofler-Hammond and Nanton, a financial services firm in Winnipeg. She began with Investors Syndicate 1949 where she was employed as secretary to the head of the audit department and other clerical positions until retirement and marriage to Don in 1974. Alice and Don were married for 29 years. They travelled extensively for pleasure and in association with Don's work as a geologist. Their travels were often to visit many friends around Canada and the world. Summers were spent at their log cabin on Cache Lake in Northwest Ontario where they canoed, fished and endeared themselves to their fellow cottagers. Music was a very important part of Alice's life, a love that she inherited from her father and uncle. She often claimed to have learned to sing before she could talk. She sang in the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir and the Westminster United Church Choir and was also a proficient pianist. When she found herself lost for words she could always express herself in song, often composing it on the fly. She valued community and philanthropy, and supported numerous community organizations and institutions. She was an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada as a volunteer and a delegate at conventions. She met Don through her association with the party. She also volunteered for the Children's Hospital Foundation Book Market sorting books for many years. Alice will live on in our hearts with the love she so freely expressed to all of us. Her friends and family would like to express their appreciation to the Rosewood/Waverley and the Riverview Health Centre for the excellent care. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). We will miss Alice at the Christmas dinner table, telling her stories about her life with Don, and regaling us with songs that she remembered from her school days. She was cheerful and opinionated, but always loving. - Posted by: Meredith Mcarthur (Cache Lake friend) on: Sep 21, 2013
