HARRY PHILL June 9, 1917 - September 22, 2013 It is with sadness that the family of Harry Phill announce his peaceful passing on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Victoria Hospital at the age of 96. Harry leaves to cherish his memory those he loved and those who loved him, his children, Sylvia (Bill Strachan), Doreen (Don Bryk), David, Brad (Gloria); grandchildren, Laurie (Shane Ivancoe) of Vancouver, Rick Strachan (Nicola) of England, Angie (Brian Hayward) of California, Chris Strachan (Wendy), Greg Bryk (Danielle) of Toronto, Andrew Bryk, Matthew Phill (Brittany), Justin and Tyler Phill; great-grandchildren, Courtney Hayward of New York, Hayley Ivancoe of Vancouver, Holly and Megan Strachan of England, Dempsey, Billy and Ella Bryk of Toronto, Connor and Liam Strachan; sister Olga Woodvine of Toronto; sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; friends from Sterling House and Fort Rouge Centre Carpet Bowling League; and Mary's daughter Heather Grimes and her family. Harry was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Sophie in 1993 and his wife Mary in 2012. Parents, Michael and Maria Fill; siblings, Walter, Annie, Nick and Sophie in childhood; sisters, Kathryn, Pat and Evelyn; and brothers, Steve, John, Matt and Nick. Harry was born and raised on his parents' farm in Poplar Park, MB. Growing up, he learned two valuable lessons: love of family and hard work. We are grateful that he wrote his memoirs, affectionately entitled "Some Good Old Times". With amazing detail he recounted many life experiences and memories from his past. One of his most memorable times were "riding the rails" in search of work as a young man and it was fortuitous as he ended up doing just that for 39 years with the CNR as a locomotive engineer. Harry and Sophie built their house on Dudley Avenue and it was the family home for 50 years. It was there they raised their children and held many family gatherings. Harry was an active member of Holy Family Parish. At different stages in his life, Harry's interests changed, but a few remained constant: love of dancing and Ukrainian music, playing cards and winning, travelling, keeping physically and mentally fit. Harry's goal was to provide for his family and he was always there to lend a hand, offer advice if asked, or to solve a problem. He set a wonderful example. Harry was respectful and respected, a true gentleman. His smile will be missed. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1001 Grant Avenue. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, also at the church. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chris, Greg, Andrew, Matt, Justin, Tyler and Rick in spirit. The family would like to thank Dr. Terry Babick and grandson Dr. Andrew Bryk for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, who helped him beat cancer. VICHNAYA PAM'YAT 204-586-8044
