DUNCAN ANDREW CROLL April 5, 1963 - October 21, 2013 It is with much pain and sadness that we announce the passing of a very special person, Andrew Croll at 50 years of age; beloved son, brother, father, cousin, nephew and friend after a long fight against colon cancer. He passed on to Heaven to be with Jesus. Andrew chose to spend time in Kenora to be closer to nature and family and on Monday morning at the Lake of the Woods General Hospital, Andrew's heart physically stopped and he peacefully left us. Andrew was predeceased by his father Duncan Angus Croll in 2001 and leaves behind his mother Valerie (Trevor) Holm, son Dylan Croll (Dylan's mother Cathy), sister Cynthia (Ken) Slapinski, best friend and "bro" Aldo Castanga, cousins Ann Storey, April (Will) Cook, Keith (Sheryl) Storey, Duncan Strong, Douglas (Kim) Strong, David (Eveline) Strong, Allison (Russ) Neufeld, aunt Meryl(Tom) Storey, uncle Gord (Jerdine) Strong, uncle Bruce (Carol) Holland, Keith (Carol, Aiden) Holm, Lara (Michael) Fuchs-Holm and many other relatives. Andrew was born in Calgary, Alberta and moved to Winnipeg at a young age. Andrew met and established a long lasting relationship and brotherly bond with Aldo Castagna as well as other friendships. Andrew attended John Dafoe, JB Mitchell and Grant Park Schools. He went on to work at a variety of jobs in Winnipeg and Kenora before attending the University of Manitoba to attain a BA in Psychology. Andrew was hired on as a student worker with the City of Winnipeg refuse department. He chose to stay on there after graduation as a temporary, then fulltime employee. He spent many years advocating for the rights of his fellow workers as both a steward and safety committee member. Andrew spent whatever time that was available with Dylan teaching him to be true to himself and a person of honesty and integrity. This led him into the area of teaching which he began studying for at the University of Manitoba. In 2011, Andrew and Dylan spent seven weeks touring Europe. His favorite places were London and Norway. Andrew enjoyed challenges especially relating to his spirit and mind. He also wanted to fulfill his dream of teaching honesty, integrity to bring clarity and light to young peoples' minds. His passion for learning, teaching and fighting for others rights led Andrew to commit to full time studies in teaching. Andrew made a variety of connections with both professor and students alike. Andrew was an extraordinary human being in that his will and strength surpassed the disease that he was experiencing. He was strong in spirit, high in integrity, true to honesty and himself and later to God. He wanted to, and did, pass these learned characteristics onto others. Andrew finally found the last piece to this puzzle to understand himself through God and by accepting Christ into his life. He is soaring high like an eagle. He is forever young. He has found unconditional love, joy and peace. We love and miss you Andrew. You have taught us all many things. We thank the Lake of the Woods General Hospital, second floor staff for their sensitivity, kindness, understanding and respect toward Andrew. We thank Tracy and all of 7th floor staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for their constant attention, respect and adherence to Andrew's understanding of himself and his needs to be heard and respected. We especially thank the Cancer Care staff at the St. Boniface Hospital who never gave up on Andrew and always heard him, respected him, and advocated for him. Tracy, Tara, Dr. Querishie, you are walking angels. Dr. Daenick, you were true, consistent and honest and unknowingly acted as a positive father figure in Andrew's life with your gentleness, protectiveness and unwavering determination to meet Andrew's needs. God bless you all! A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 1 at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, 255 Oak Street, at Kingsway, at 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place on Sunday, November 3, at Lake of the Woods Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. as per his mother's wishes. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Andrew may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 1160 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. We pray that a cure will be found.
