EDWARD STANLEY STARODUB
Date of Passing: Oct 31, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDWARD STANLEY STARODUB It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Stanley Starodub, husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend. Surrounded by his family, Dad passed away at Betel Home in the early morning hours of October 31, 2013 at the age of 88. Dad will lovingly and forever be remembered by his wife Mary; sons Robert (Linda) and Ronald (Ardine); grandchildren, Janine, Stephanie and Lauren; and sisters Rosiland and Helen. Dad was predeceased by his parents Maria and Michael; sisters, Kaye, Frances and Stephanie and brothers Joe, Peter, Walter, Frank and Philip. Dad was born December 24, 1924 and was a lifelong resident of East Selkirk. He grew up working on the family farm. On September 10, 1949, he married Mary Timo and they recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Dad worked in the construction industry until retiring in 1988. He always took special pride in pointing out the many landmark buildings throughout Winnipeg that he had had a hand in working on. He was especially proud of having helped build the St. Stanislaus Church, which he and mom have been lifelong members of. Dad loved people. He could always be found striking up a conversation with someone while out shopping in Selkirk. He enjoyed going for coffee with his friend Pete Bilinsky and talking about old times. He always had a knack for coming up with funny sayings to make people laugh. He loved the outdoors. In summer most of his time was spent tending to his garden or his yard. He would always be offering some types of vegetables to visitors. In winter, he would be seen snowblowing all the neighbours driveways. Following his retirement in 1988, he started to travel. His love for casinos found him making multiple trips to Las Vegas with friends and family. He enjoyed bus trips to Nashville and Mahnomen, but the highlight was his trip to Hawaii in 1990. He found renewed vigor and enthusiasm for life upon the birth of his granddaughters. His "Three Little Apples" meant the world to him and he was so very proud of all their accomplishments. Dad loved having his family around him. He was a dedicated family man, a devoted husband, father and grandpa, our pillar of strength, our rock to lean on. His generosity not only flowed to his family but to those around him. We will so dearly miss him. Sincere thanks to Lindsay, Anya, and the many other staff at Betel Home for the special care and compassion provided to Dad, especially in his final few days. Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, November 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in East Selkirk. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made to Betel Home Foundation, Selkirk, Manitoba. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Growing up in East Selkirk everyone knew the Starodub and Tymo families (our neighbors). our paths crossed many times in those formative years. My sincere condolences to Aunty Mary, Ron and Rob and their families. I know too well how hard it is to lose a father. Although I left Selkirk at a very young age, I had returned in previous years and was able to visit and go for ice cream with Uncle Ed and Aunty Mary. I am glad I had those short visits with him. Moving away, you sometimes lose focus of where you came from and those visits reminded me of my childhood days in Selkirk. Cherish the memories and know that Uncle Ed is now in a better place alongside his brothers. Heaven now has a new angel...what a party it will be! - Posted by: Liz Huston (Niece) on: Nov 04, 2013

Our love and sympathy to Mary and family. This is a time of sorrow for us all. Ed and I had a good time together when we were kids as we lived right across the road. We were a team in Brandon and Kenora in our youth. For many years we visited with Ed and Mary when we went West from Ontario. May God bless you Ed in Heaven. - Posted by: Michael and Mary Starodub (Burlington On) (cousins) on: Nov 02, 2013

It was an honour to be a part of Ed "Papa's" life over the last couple of years at Betel home. He was truly the kind of resident who makes my job worth it. Always put a smile on my face and as mentioned in the obituary always had a comment or story that would make me giggle and quickly turn my day from one of chaos and sometimes frustration, to a day of happiness as he would remind me what I was "truly" there for. It was also a great pleasure getting to know the whole Starodub family much better over the last couple of weeks; my prayers are with you guys. Papa; you will be greatly missed..."so long" - Posted by: Lindsay Johnson () on: Nov 02, 2013

It's hard to be away from home when someone passes away but it is particularly difficult when a lot of memories of home are attached to that person. Growing up as the youngest of the cousins, I spent a lot of time on 'Starodub Drive', aka Strathcona Road, and a lot of that time was spent going for walks with my Mom and visiting my aunts and uncles. Visiting Uncle Ed and Auntie Mary meant stories about the old days--barn dances and card games--and always a few cookies which were more than appreciated. As mentioned by my sister Sue, Uncle Ed's humour and concern will always be remembered and I send my love and blessings to him, Auntie Mary, Rob, Ron, and families. - Posted by: Lori Starodub (Niece) on: Nov 01, 2013

Growing up just down the road from Uncle Ed, Aunty Mary, Rob and Ron, I saw the family regularly. When I moved away and came home for visits Uncle Ed would always ask when I was going to go to work at CKY and do the weather on TV like Sylvia Kuzyk. Through my moves to Regina, Flin Flon and, finally, Thompson, he always marvelled at how far my husband and children had to drive to come home for visits. He'd ask me, "Aren't you nervous to drive so far?" and then he'd add, "Drive carefully. Take it slow." With his passing, the era of the Starodub brothers has sadly ended. Now the sons and nephews have to step in and take up the torch. We'll all miss you Uncle Ed, but I think there will be some good cribbage tournaments in Heaven now. Say "hi" to Dad. - Posted by: Sue O'Brien (Niece) on: Nov 01, 2013

Ed will always be remembered for his smile and his willingness to help others. His marriage to Mary was a highlight to myself (Patricia) as that was the first wedding I attended. Memories of Edward and Mary on the farmstead adjacent to ours and their coming to my parents home to visit and watch wrestling or the Ed Sullivan show still stay fresh. Then they moved to East Selkirk as family was on the way. Ed and Mary did not lose touch. He will be missed. Condolences to all family members. - Posted by: Gary and Pat Hamilton (cousins) on: Nov 01, 2013
