ELAINE DOROTHY ALLDEN (nee FARMER) Elaine passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre on November 5, 2013. Left to cherish with fond memories are her beloved husband of 55 years Richard, daughters Diane (Wayne) Zimmerman, Sharon (Jeff) Hollins, and son Brian (Leslie) Allden; grandchildren Blake and Brock Zimmerman, Lauren and Corbin Hollins and Andy Allden, all of Winnipeg; brother-in-law Bill Merrick, nephews Glenn Merrick and family, and Kevin Merrick, all of Duluth, MN. Elaine was predeceased by her identical twin sister Joyce Merrick (September 2013), and her parents John and Marjorie (nee Puttee) Farmer of Winnipeg. Elaine was born July 17, 1936, grew up on College Avenue and later settled in Riverview. She attended Kelvin School and United College and was a proud nursing graduate, Class of 1957B, Winnipeg General Hospital. Her varied nursing career included Children's Hospital, a private practice, night supervisor at Oakview Place, establishing an occupational health unit at McLeod's and ultimately as a staff nurse at Eaton's until her retirement in 1988. Along the way, she married the love of her life Richard in 1958 to become a devoted wife, mother and grandmother active in home, school and community life. Elaine valued her close friendships made during her nursing training, as a member of the Junior League of Winnipeg, and amongst her Westwood neighbours of nearly 50 years. But always central to her life was her special closeness with sister Joyce and her family, and many happy times, especially summer and Christmas vacations, spent together in Duluth and at their cabin on Lake Vermilion. She also loved Victoria Beach, and to travel, with special memories of adventures in Hong Kong, Hawaii, Mexico, Florida and cruising the Atlantic to England. Elaine's lengthy journey with dementia has included residing at Beacon Hill Lodge, at Calvary Place and mercifully ended after more than three years in the Special Care Unit, Deer Lodge Centre. Throughout her ordeal, she has consistently received excellent care, delivered with utmost compassion and skill. The family is most grateful. For friends wishing to remember Elaine, a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (www.Alzheimer.mb.ca) would be much appreciated. Funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2013 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
