ROBERT GARRITY 1936-2013
Born: Dec 10, 1936
Date of Passing: Nov 12, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT GARRITY 1936-2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Robert Garrity, on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. He passed peacefully with his family by his side after a valiant fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Left to cherish Bob's memory is his loving wife of 49 years Vivien, his son Michael (Sherri), daughter Jacqueline (Marcel) and the sparkle in his eyes the grandchildren Marques, Kiera and Jason. He is also survived by brothers Richard, Patrick (Helen), Raymond, John, Brian (Joan), James (Beverley); sister Kathleen; In-laws Marion, Terry, Gayle (Bob), John (Diane), Cindy (Harvey); many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends. He was predeceased by his father William James; mother Marguerite Janet; parents-in-law Steven and Lillian Naften; brother Roger; sister Mae Nichols of Edmonton and sister-in-law Caroline Cobb of California. Dad was born in Lundar on December 10, 1936 and at an early age moved to Winnipeg with his family. He grew up in the Point Douglas area attending Immaculate Conception School, Norquay School, and Tec Voc. Bob found the love of his life in the neighbourhood and married Vivien on a bright, warm day, November 7, 1964. They moved to East Kildonan where they began their family. He was active in Michael and Jackie's sports lives, coaching hockey, baseball, soccer, and ringette. The red van was always full on our way to a game! He was also involved in the Morse Place Community Center as Treasurer for a number of years. Dad retired from the Winnipeg Hydro after 36 years as an exemplary employee. He worked as an electrician in the appliance repair division after completing his apprenticeship in 1968. He made lifelong friends at the Hydro. His retirement was enjoyable as he took up woodworking, learning computers, golfing, enjoying time at the cottage at Lester Beach and traveling. Bob and Vivien enjoyed many trips over the years including many spots in Canada and USA, Mexico, Jamaica, Cuba, Portugal, and England. Bob was always happy to be with family. Dinners, holiday celebrations, horseshoe tournaments - he treasured those moments and loved his family. Once the grandkids came along, he enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible. Marques, Kiera and Jason were spectacular in his eyes. He rarely missed a concert or game, and enjoyed when they visited at home or at the cottage. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Gerard Parish, 45 Foster Street, officiated by Father Greg. A reception will take place after the service at St. Gerard school hall. As per dad's wishes, cremation has taken place. A heartfelt thank-you is extended to the kind and considerate medical staff at the ICU at Concordia Hospital. Their compassionate care for dad was much appreciated and provided him and us much comfort at a difficult time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice or the ALS Society. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Mrs. Garrity, Jacqueline and Michael, my thoughts are with you and your family. Mr. Garrity was a part of the best time of my life as a youth growing up in the neighborhood when I played baseball. He was our coach along with Mr.Buhr and Mr. Duncan. Mr. Garrity always had a smile and was always encouraging. It's been many years now that have passed but I always share the great experience and memories I have of playing ball for Morse Place CC and the fun we had! Thanks Coach! You'll be missed. - Posted by: Kim Wightman (Swayze) (My coach!) on: Nov 19, 2013

I thank GOD for Bob Garrity. Bob has been a wonderful example of how to be a loving father, husband, friend and pillar of the community. If people thought of me as I think of Bob Garrity then my life would have been well lived. My heart hurts. I will miss him as long as I live. Bob is physically gone but his legacy is the love he gave to us which we all must pass on to those we love. "Well done thy good and faithful servant" Bob was more than the best man at my wedding. Bob was one of the BEST MEN I have ever known. Bob James - Posted by: Bob James (Brother in Law) on: Nov 16, 2013

Hi Vivien, I was sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved husband Robert (Bob) from my brother Walter and offer my sincere condolences. I remember him and his bother Rodger, when they lived on Gladstone Street. Rodger I knew better because he coached the hockey team I was on when I was around 12 to 14 years old. Our family lived on Gladstone street before I was born and moved to Syndicate street in 1939 and then onto McFarlane. - Posted by: Stan Kuzak (Friend) on: Nov 16, 2013
