Born: May 05, 1932
Date of Passing: Nov 21, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRICHARD KENT MACOOMB M.D. May 5, 1932 - November 21, 2013 On November 21, 2013, after a life well-lived, Richard passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Carol. He will be sadly missed by his children, Catherine Brown (Tom), Elizabeth, Frances, Carol Levin (Gerald), and his granddaughters Alexandra and Elizabeth Brown. Richard was born in Winnipeg and graduated from Isaac Newton High School. He was proud of his North End roots. He attended the University of Manitoba where he completed his Bachelor of Science and his Medical Degree. He chose Orthopaedic Surgery as his specialty and in 1965 he completed his Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His many years of devoted and compassionate service to his patients began at the Winnipeg Clinic where he also served as Head of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief Executive Officer. His operating privileges at the Health Sciences Centre and the Misericordia Hospital spanned 35 years. Knee surgery and hip replacements were his primary specialties. He was a pioneer on the forefront of minimally invasive surgery and diagnostics and was one of the first in Western Canada to perform arthroscopic knee surgery. His professional accomplishments included numerous Board and Committee positions. He was very involved in the Canadian Orthopaedic Association serving as Treasurer from 1985 to 1988 and Secretary from 1988 to 1991. In 1994 he was honoured with an "Outstanding Service Award" from the Canadian Orthopaedic Association. He was on the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Orthopaedic Foundation from 1984 through 1997 and served as its President from 1990 to 1997. His teaching appointments at the University of Manitoba spanned 24 years. Upon retirement from surgery, he worked at the Worker's Compensation Board of Manitoba and continued to see patients at the Winnipeg Clinic. Richard worked hard and was well respected by his patients and colleagues. His gifted pair of hands in the operating room made him the perfect "Mr. Fix-it" at home. He relished the challenge of problem solving and loved to putter. He enjoyed family summers at Lake of the Woods and West Hawk Lake, as well as winter vacations in Barbados. He was a voracious reader, and was particularly fond of historical non-fiction. He had a lifelong appreciation of traditional Canadian fine art. Another one of his pleasures was planning and cooking gourmet Sunday dinners with Carol. We will miss his quiet presence, dry wit and humility. Our most heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to all of the staff at the Tuxedo Villa Extendicare, Station 3. There will be a private family service. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to commemorate his life and career may consider donations to L'Arche Winnipeg, 118 Regent Avenue East, Winnipeg MB R2C 0C1 or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada/ Manitoba Division, Suite 100, 1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L8. Dr. Macomb taught me more about being an Orthopedic Surgeon than anyone else! He was nothing short of a spectacular teacher. I owe most of my career (36 years) to his training!! - Posted by: Randall Rogalsky (Resident ) on: Aug 25, 2023

What happy memories I have of Richard when he hosted The Canadian Orthopaedic meeting in Winnipeg. He was a wonderful doctor and had a keen interest in medicine and caring for people. He was a family man and was very proud of his children. Carol was there to offer support and strength during all the years. Orthopaedic wives shared many interesting and difficult times. Goodbye to a special man. My thoughts and prayers to Carol and the family. Lois Hazlett - Posted by: Lois Hazlett (Friend) on: Mar 17, 2014

I met Dr. Macoomb on the evening of September 8th, 1988, after having met a vehicle head on while riding my bicycle. His very professional demeanor was only bested by his skill as a surgeon. He took the time to call my wife after the surgery at 3:00 a.m. to let her know that everything would be OK. He was gentleman and a consummate professional. My condolences to the family. He was a good man. - Posted by: Les McLaughlin (Patient) on: Nov 23, 2013

Dick Macoomb was a loyal Winnipegger and a great Ambassador for Manitoba Orthopaedic Surgery. For many years he was a stalwart on the Board of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association. He was a great clinical teacher in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery and those of us graduating in the program during his tenure benefitted immensely from his knowledge and experience. It was a pleasure and an honour to have known, worked and learned from him. Our sincere condolences to Carol and family. - Posted by: Merv and Marilyn Letts (Friends) on: Nov 23, 2013
