JOYCE BARBARA SCHAEFFER (nee FISCHBEIN) Peacefully, after a painful and extended illness and surrounded by her family, Joyce Barbara Schaeffer passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre on Tuesday, December 3, 2013. Joyce was born in New York City on October 24, 1939. She was the older of two sisters, and despite being born with cerebral palsy, she was proud of leading an independent and full life. She attended New York University and achieved a Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She married Donald Schaeffer in 1965 in New York and started a family there five years later. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1974 and made Winnipeg (Transcona) her home. She was an active participant in Toastmistresses (Topaz Club) for decades. She was active in the Reform Jewish community, deeply involved in Temple Shalom. Joyce loved to laugh, cook, sew and did macramé. She was personified by her strength of personality and her love for her family and community. She is survived by Donald, her son and daughter, Marc and Tracey. She also leaves behind three beautiful granddaughters: Hannah Zoe, Alexandra Maja and Samantha Joy. A funeral service will be held at Temple Shalom at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 2013, 1077 Grant Ave. with light refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Temple Shalom General Fund would be appreciated. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

  • I met Joyce and her family as a young person. She spent time with me playing board games (backgammon), visiting during holidays, she and her family shared their traditions and were kind to our family. I loved that her home was filled with books. I have very fond memories of our time together and I hope that she is at peace. Life could be hard and challenging and she was a strong and good person. - Posted by: Jo McCutcheon (Family friend and neighbour) on: Dec 06, 2013
