ALAN C. WADE September 9, 1923 !December 7, 2013 On Saturday, December 7, 2013 Dad passed away at the age of 90 with his family by his side. He was predeceased by his wife Thelma, daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Joe Dubreuil. Dad is survived by his daughter Carol (Al) Moody and son Randal (Lynne) Wade, grandchildren Randal Jr. (Donna), Sherry (Zenon), Colleen, Derrick (Takako), Rick (Angie), Suzette (Rick), and great-grandchildren Michael, Tyson, Austin, Melissa, Sara, Charlotte, James, Natsuki, and Ayaka. Dad was born on September 9, 1923 in Weston, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Wade family has lived in Weston since 1910. Dad was educated at Cecil Rhodes School. He took a correspondence course in Painting and Decorating with the British Columbia University in 1946!47. He also continued his education with Department of Veteran Affairs courses. Dad spent three years, from 1943 to 1946, in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was trained to be an Airframe Mechanic. He was stationed after training at the No. 3 Wireless Flying Squadron in Winnipeg. Dad served his apprenticeship with the Canadian Pacific Railway, in Coach and Locomotive painting. He attended courses at the Manitoba Labour Institute on "Law for the Layman" and "Public Speaking". He became active in union activities in 1947, joining the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of Canada and the United States. Dad's political activities first began when he became a delegate from his union to attend political seminars during the founding of the New Democratic Party. He became a member of the C.C.F., the party of labour before the N.D.P. He attended the founding convention of the New Democratic Party in Ottawa. His involvement in working with Stanley Knowles, M.P., began with his election to the Chairmanship of Winnipeg North Centre in 1963. He became the Campaign Chairman and later the Manager of the Federal Campaigns until Stanley's retirement in September of 1984. He was also Stanley Knowles' assistant for eight years. Dad was nominated by Howard Pawley to run for City Council in 1962. He was first elected to Council in 1963 and served on many Committees during his 28 years on Council. Dad had a keen interest in the General Hospital and later the Health Sciences Centre. He served as a volunteer Board member for nine years, working on various Committees of the Board. His interest in volunteering to work with Hospital Boards continued with his appointment in 1983 to the Municipal Hospital Commission. With his railway experience and City Council finance experience, he was appointed to be a Budgeting Analyst for the Canadian Pacific Weston Shops, a position he held for his last four years with the railway. Dad decided to retire early after 43 years with the railway and devote more time to being a City Councillor. He also had extra time to take lessons and learned how to play the violin. Dad married mom (Thelma Farley) on January 9, 1943. They had three children - Carol, Brenda and Randal. Dad built a house in Weston after serving in the Air Force, then in 1957 bought the house next door at 1492 William Ave., where he lived until moving to Fred Douglas Lodge last March. Mom and Dad spent many years traveling with their trailer across Canada and the United States. They would go to Edmonton every September to celebrate his and Brenda's birthdays together. They also enjoyed going to their cottage at Barrier Bay. All the family liked going with them and having Dad take us fishing and turtle hunting. Mom would fire up the wood stove Dad built on cold days and roast us all out saying it was "Just Right". After Mom passed away 10 years ago, Dad continued traveling, taking some cruises and still going away with his trailer. When Dad couldn't drive anymore, he would go on holidays with Randal, Lynne and the grandchildren. He loved going to the Black Hills in South Dakota but even better was going to Branson, Missouri and watching the music shows. His love for music continued until the end and you could tell he was happy by watching him clapping his hands or tapping his foot. The family would like to thank all the staff at Fred Douglas Lodge for the compassionate care Dad received during his stay there. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2013 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 9Z9. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com
