Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLORNE K. LOEWEN November 28, 1935 !December 8, 2013 Lorne K. Loewen, 78, passed away at Health Sciences Centre on December 8, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He leaves to mourn his best friend and loving wife of 54 years, Arlene; son Alex (Bev), Brock and Thalin; daughters: Bonnie-Anne (Mark Loewen), Kyra, Issac and Jacob, Merrilee (Karl Galbraith); sisters: Norma (Harry Koop), Elda (Allan Dueck), Eleanor (Dennis Siemens); and sister-in-law Valerie Loewen. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Randall. Also left to mourn his passing are many relatives and friends. Lorne was born on November 28, 1935 to his parents, Peter L. and Margaret Loewen, in the R.M. of Morris, MB. Lorne grew up on his parents' farm in Rosenort. At 16 years of age, Lorne began working in construction, eventually becoming a Proficiency Carpenter that lasted until his retirement at age 66. During his retirement, he continued using his skills by helping his children and teaching his grandchildren. Lorne and Arlene began volunteering at SIM in Sebring, FL. This ministry of service continued until 2013 when health concerns prevented them from returning. Lorne's expertise as a carpenter and his gentle spirit was greatly appreciated and together they enjoyed six winters at the SIM Retirement Village in Sebring. Lorne was baptized upon confession of faith in 1951 and became a member of the Rosenort Evangelical Mennonite Church. In 1971, Lorne and Arlene moved to Winnipeg and became active members of the Braeside Evangelical Mennonite Church, serving in numerous committees and as a deacon couple. Lorne was a quiet, gentle man, a deep thinker and avid reader. A man who appreciated peace, he loved God and his Bible, his church, his family and many friends. Some of his favorite authors were Phillip Yancey and Henry Nouwen. In late October, Lorne was diagnosed with mesothelioma. He accepted this difficult diagnosis with grace and lived his final days assured that he was in God's care. The family thanks Dr. L. Tan and the staff at Health Sciences Centre for the gentle and compassionate care he received. The family is also grateful for the many prayers and acts of kindness offered throughout these difficult days. The memorial service will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m at Braeside Evangelical Mennonite Church, 1011 Munroe Ave., Winnipeg. Private family burial prior to the service. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Lorne may be made to E.M.C. Missions. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030

Our condolences on the loss of your husband, father, and friend. I knew Lorne as a gentleman. He will be missed by the Sebring folks where Joy's folks lived after retirement as well as friends and family in MB. We just heard this news a few days ago from someone in Florida! May the Lord comfort you all. I think Lorne is enjoying the music of heaven. - Posted by: Ed & Joy Loewen (distant relative - Ed, former Rosenorter and Joy, connected to SIM Sebring) on: Dec 21, 2013

Got to know Lorne and Arlene thru Lorne's participation on a number of work teams to Nicaragua. Lorne's support of and encouragement for missions was exemplary and his friendship and kind words will be sorely missed! The Loewen family remains in our hearts and prayers. - Posted by: Ernie Koop (friend) on: Dec 12, 2013

My Uncle Lorne was a quiet man who listened a lot more than he spoke. As the years have passed I have come to greatly admire people like my Uncle Lorne who are willing to listen more, judge less and accept people where they are. On a few occasions amidst the chaos of a conversation, his voice would in quiet confidence drown out the much louder sounds around me and his words of understanding were as reassuring as they were sensible. I will miss him. - Posted by: Myron Dueck (nephew) on: Dec 12, 2013

I am heartbroken for you Merrilee and for your entire family. Just this past summer we talked about how similar our Fathers were and the speed with which you have had to come to terms with his illness and now his passing... it's all very painful. I wish I could be closer but I know you have Karl, Alex and Bev, Bonnie and Mark and your extended family there to comfort each other and your beloved mum.
