CLARENCE (CAL) BENNETT
Date of Passing: Dec 17, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCLARENCE (CAL) BENNETT Cal passed away peacefully at the Lundar Personal Care Home on December 17, 2013 at the age of 96 years. He is lovingly remembered by his children Shirley, Sherian (Ed), Sandra (Michael), Carol, Patricia (Max), Fred (Loraley), Ron (Leslie) and Robin (Barry). (He liked to tell people that he had two and a half-dozen kids - two boys and a half dozen girls). He is also survived by his grandchildren Loraley, Burke, Todd, Nicole, Heidi, James, Pamela, Gordon, Marcie, Devon, Tracy, Kirk, Angela, Jeff, Jason, Adam, Blaine, Tyler, Katie, Alicia, Haley, Nicholas, Dylan, Travis, Mandy and Shane. Cal was great-grandfather to 30. He was very proud of all his children and grandchildren and all of their successes. He is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Bottrell and Kay Watson. Cal was predeceased by Dorothy, his wife of 68 years. They lived and worked together on their farm at Clarkleigh until 2007 when Dorothy's failing health forced them to move to Lundar. This was a difficult transition for Cal. He missed the farm greatly and nothing made him happier than driving his truck back to see "the boys" and help with odd jobs. Cal was very involved with community life. He served for many years as a school trustee, first for the Clarkleigh School Board and then for the Lakeshore School Division. In this capacity he was instrumental in the creation of a new program in the high school teaching carpentry skills. This appealed to his practical nature and this instruction helped many students launch careers in this field and for him this was a source of pride. Cal believed in honest hard work, and helping a neighbour in need. He enjoyed many sports. In his earlier years he played hockey and baseball, curled, and enjoyed the camaraderie these sports provided. He loved to watch his grandsons play hockey, never able to sit still in the stands but pacing up and down, following the puck. He placed a high value in having a good education and although he had only a Grade 8 education Cal was self-taught and was a wise and thoughtful man. He was an avid reader, was a whiz at doing crossword puzzles and he could recite at length poetry he had memorized as a student. The family wants to thank Dr. Neil Burnett who was so good to dad over the years. Also a huge thank-you is extended to the staff at the personal care home who treated him so well, affording him dignity and understanding. Lastly, the family sends their deepest appreciation to Einar Sigurdson, dad's "old faithful" friend, who spent many hours driving him up and down the country roads to check out the crops and look for wildlife. Cal especially enjoyed it when family would drive him back to the farm to check to make sure the work was getting done! A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Lundar Legion Hall with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Interment to follow in the Clarkleigh Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Cal's grandsons Jim Johnson, Devon Danielson, Jason and Adam Bergthorson, Blaine and Tyler Bennett, Nicholas and Dylan Bennett, and Shane LePage. Honorary pallbearers are the rest of his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lundar Personal Care Home Guild, c/o Judy Gleich, P.O. Box 296, Lundar, MB R0C 1Y0. Cal's was a life well-lived. We were so blessed to have him in our lives and we loved him dearly. Sleep well Dad. Arrangements by: ARNASON FUNERAL HOME Ashern - Lundar 1-204-768-2072 1-866-323-3593
