BARBARA QUINLAN
Born: Feb 16, 1940
Date of Passing: Jan 02, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBARBARA QUINLAN Peacefully, in the early morning hours of January 2, 2014 with her children by her side, Barbara Quinlan passed away after a two year battle with cancer. She will be dearly missed by Lary Haynes; Bob Quinlan; daughter Christine (Charlie); son Thomas (Tobey); grandchildren Tana and Gavin, as well as friends and extended family throughout Germany and Canada. Born February 16, 1940 in Münster, Germany, Barb arrived in Canada with Bob and Christine in 1962. Mom's greatest passions were teaching and travel. Acquiring her teaching degree in her late 30's, Mom worked many years for the Winnipeg One and Seven Oaks School Divisions. She was a well-respected teacher who humoured many a colleague and student with her vibrant personality. Mom travelled worldwide, satisfying her spirit of wanderlust. When she wasn't travelling, Mom spent a lot of time at her cabin in Redditt, Ontario with her dog Daisy. Mom also loved languages and would take every opportunity to speak "en français" or "auf Deutsch". Barb lived a full and active life, leaving her unique stamp on whatever she undertook. A special thank you to CancerCare Manitoba - St. Boniface Unit and the staff on the 5th floor of the Women's Hospital for their kindness and care. Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life will take place at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, donations may be made to Ovarian Cancer Canada. www.seasonsfunerals.ca

I was deeply saddened today upon reading of Madame Quinlan's passing. She was always amazing. Welcoming and one my favorites. Her saying "what goes past the lips sticks to the hips" still is giggled about in passing conversations when reminiscing. Such a beautiful soul. - Posted by: Megan (Student Belmont grade 2 Winnipeg) on: Feb 28, 2018

Mme. Quinlan, as I knew her, was always my favorite substitute teacher. In the mid 2000s she would always substitute at Riverbend School, and we would always look forward to her. I can just remember so many great memories—with her gummy jar, and old fashioned scary stories and fairy tales. She was just one of the most happy people I've ever had the chance to meet. Very cool to see that she's touched the lives of so many from so many years before mine. - Posted by: Kenny Ingram (Student) on: May 07, 2015

Mrs Quinlan is a teacher that we all loved and respected (as much as 9/10 yr olds know how). I was always a quiet observant one and still am. I reflect back on our elementary years and wonder how our teachers are. Would love for them to see us now. Maybe see a glimmer of pride knowing they, more specifically she contributed to our successes in life. Mrs Quinlan will always be Mrs Quinlan to me, out of respect for the role she played and for the character she displayed. I'm sad to know I won't see her again here but I know she's lived a full life and I am one of thousands that she has impacted. Thank you Mrs Quinlan for placing the building blocks of life in me so that I like many others can grow up and build a family tree. - Posted by: Sean (Grade 3 student at Centennial School) on: Jul 11, 2014

Mrs. Quinlan was my grade 3 teacher at Centennial school in the mid 1980's. She was one of the best teachers I ever had. She was fun, loving, and entertaining, but stern enough to keep a class of little kids under control. She always encouraged us to do our very best. Bon soir, Madame Quinlan!! - Posted by: Tanya Veness (Student) on: Jul 11, 2014

Mrs. Qunilan was my grade 3 teacher at Centennial School and was always my favorite teacher. My Dad had passed away during that time and her caring and compassionate ways had helped me through a very rough time and for that I have been always grateful and have never forgotten her. My thoughts are with family, friends and anyone who's lives she touched. She was an amazing person and will be sadly missed by all those who new her. - Posted by: Carlene Hotz (Former Student) on: Jul 11, 2014

- Posted by: Michelle Pétrin (amie et collègue) on: Apr 28, 2014

Mrs. Quinlan was my grade 1 teacher, (we were her last (and favorite!) class before she retired - only to substitute for many more years) and a substitute a few different times later in elementary school - of all the teachers I have had throughout life she has always been my favorite! I'll never forget her voice or her laugh and I still think of her every time I think of The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, and every time I build a quinzee in the snow. My sincerest condolences she was a truly amazing woman. - Posted by: Stefanie () on: Jan 10, 2014

My first memory of Barbara stems from a family gathering in Darmstadt (Germany) in the early seventies, but the fondest from 1976 and 1980, when we visited her in Winnipeg and spent a couple of weeks on her wonderful island on a lake in Ontario. If I am right, back then she drove a flashy sportscar, maybe a Camaro, and I was very impressed! Having been only eleven years of age at the first visit I still remember her introducing us to anybody who was somebody in the village Redditt and telling us in detail how everything should be handled from waterpump, lavatory to motorboat. We loved to pick the blueberries around the cabin and drank the water from the lake while swimming. It was great to experience her positive attitude and energy at family gatherings in Germany in the last few years and to listen to her amusing anecdotes! We miss her very much Tilmann with Yvonne Isabel, Ferdinand, Viktoria & Carolina - Posted by: Tilmann Gerhards (nephew) on: Jan 09, 2014

Most impressing on Barbara´s stays in Karlsruhe has been her interest in every single detail either conc. children´s developments in School or conc. Facebook activities. We all loved her style that let her look so much younger than she was. We miss her positive and motivated view on all aspects of life. Barbara, c u in heaven! Mrs. Quinlan was my Grade 5 teacher at HC Avery. Even 30 years later I remember how she was tough but fair. I saw her 10 years later when visiting a class and she remembered me; she had all her class pictures up on her classroom wall. "Motormouth Maria" she called me--that still makes me smile. What an amazing woman she was. I hope she knows what an impact she had on people's lives. My deepest condolences to her family. Rest In Peace Mrs. Quinlan. - Posted by: Maria Fernandes (Former student) on: Jan 07, 2014

Barbara came to visit us in our Blackforest home once a year during the last decade when traveling through Germany. All of our 7 children loved her great humor, joyfulness and optimism. We have so many memories of her enjoying good food with us in Greece "ihr verwöhnt mich so" and being so supportive to our youngest daughter Lotti. We miss her so much. - Posted by: Christiane Gerhards (niece) on: Jan 07, 2014
