GRACE MERKEL December 18, 1921 December 22, 2013 Grace was predeceased by her parents; Ernest and Georgina and her brother Charles (Audrey). She will be missed by her nephews; Richard (Patti), Bob and Craig, her great-nephews and nieces Gordon (Denise), Rob, Christopher, Christie (Neil), Kim and Jen (Jay) and many great-great-nieces, nephews and friends. Grace was blessed throughout her life with many friends, some starting early in life and others in her twilight years. All of these were special to her and she wished to pay them special thanks for their guidance, support and times together. Her early years were spent in the North End where Margie Shore became a lifelong friend. Summers were spent on the farm at Spring Valley (a Merkel enclave) where she met Dot, Grace (x2) and Lloyd. She recalled many adventures and remembers this as one of the happiest times of her life. After graduating high school, her working career spanned more than fifty years and included Traders Finance, Sherwin Williams, Globelite Batteries, Toshiba and CAW. In her early years Grace took up athletics (horseback riding, target shooting and golf). She spent many happy hours with Anne Steininger, Nadia Burke and Evelyn Donnheimer. Charles married Audrey in 1942 and they became lifelong companions. She spent summer vacations at Grand Beach with Marion Emery and her son Cliff. After moving to Lanark Street where the neighbors welcomed her with open arms, afternoon cocktails with the Goodrich, Edwards, MacLean, Mackenzie, and Humphries families was always a highlight of her day. Later Gordon and Lisa were to become next door neighbors and were a great help to her. When Julie Maclean and Mary Sobko entered her life, they provided an extended family. Always wanting to get better, she took up swimming. Myrtle and Bill Roberts provided encouragement and Myrt even participated in the lessons. With Aunt Myrt and Uncle Bill many happy hours were spent watching Dallas, playing Yahtzee and spending time at the cottage at Falcon Lake. Later in life she met Karen Skinner, Karen had a special place in Grace's heart. She also reconnected with Dot (Dorothy and Larry Krocker). Dot was her counsellor, helper, advisor and became her best friend. Marie who Grace described as one of her favorite people was always there to help. Lastly, Grace moved to the Portsmouth where the ladies of the 114 Wing and her dinner table provided friendship, good times and joy. Lastly, she also wished to thank Richard and Patti for all the help they provided to her. In accordance with Grace's wishes she has been cremated and a private ceremony celebrating her life will be held at a later date. For those wishing to remember Grace who loved her dogs she would request that you make a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society. For others please have a smile, a wee drinkie and a rousing game of Yahtzee. Glen Eden Funeral Home & Cemetery 338-7111

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I got to know Grace in the last seven or eight years of her life. The first time we met was in San Diego when she came to vist my now wife (Christie) on the ship we were working on at the time. I knew right away that she was quite a character. I'll never forget going on a quite extensive tour of Ixtapa. I decided to help her into the boat on which we would be travelling. There must have been at least a three or four foot drop from the pier into the vessel. I took her by the hand, and she looked me in the eye, and just jumped right into the boat. Keeping in mind she was in her mid to late eighties at the time I was a little shocked. She sure was young at heart, and had a very obvious zest for life. We always enjoyed her visits to the Merkel clan every December, and enjoyed getting our butts kicked at yahtzee (over some wee drinkies of course). She was a most gracious (pun intended) host when Christie and I were passing through Winnipeg a few years ago. In tribute to this great lady we will be naming our daughter Emily Grace McVey. I'm pleased to have gotten to know her a little in the past few years, and will remember her fondly. Sleep well Auntie Grace. - Posted by: Neil McVey (Nephew in law) on: Feb 10, 2014

  • I have fond memories of Grace working at the CAW. She was the very first one to challenge the rule of working past age 65. She stayed on a little longer than usual but was always a great worker and had the respect of her coworkers and management. Rest in peace Dear Grace. - Posted by: Nancy Kearnan (Friend and workmate) on: Jan 07, 2014

  • Auntie Grace has been an integral part of our family even though we are in Calgary. We always enjoyed her visits and thought of her as the "Character" of the family. Auntie Grace had many funny stories from her past and was always up for a good time. She always outlasted us as she stayed up past our bed time. Her Calgary family would like to thank Bob, Marie and Dot for all the support they provided to Auntie Grace especially when she wasn't well. Auntie Grace thought of Bob as her son and she truly appreciated him. Love you Auntie Grace - Posted by: Richard and Patti Merkel (nephew and spouse) on: Jan 06, 2014

  • You will be greatly missed, and I am so happy that I got to see you this past summer. I know I am not a blood relative but you were there when I was born and we have been close all these years. Mom[Marion] thought of you as a sister and you are closing the book on an era of greatness, fun and laughter, especially at Grand Beach. Say HI to my Mom on the other side and keep the party going. • We miss you Auntie Grace! You taught me so much over the years: naughty poems, how to properly enjoy a wee drinkie and most importantly, how to "get a leg up" and smoke the competition at Yahtzee! You were such a rare and special person, hopefully your namesake great, great, great niece will continue on in your honor! (AFTER her 18th birthday!) We love you. - Posted by: Christie & Neil McVey (Great great niece and partner) on: Jan 04, 2014

  • To Grace, our love and farewell and thank you for always being there for us. We have many great memories of all the fun and laughter which we will cherish. Sorry we didn't get to hug you one more time. Love Mary and Julie. - Posted by: Mary and Julie (Good long time friends) on: Jan 04, 2014
