GEORGE PAULS George Pauls was born January 12, 1925, the second youngest in a family of eight brothers and two sisters, in Winkler, Manitoba. He quit school after grade eight to work to supplement the family income. Later in life, he completed his grade 12 and received his diploma. With the onset of the Second World War, George enlisted and joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, training first as a gunner and later as infantry. He was injured in the Netherlands at age 19. An infection resulted in the amputation of his left hand. After the war, George worked for a Winkler area farmer. He married Mary Funk in December of 1949 and they had five sons. He managed a coffee shop and later the Harvest Inn restaurant for almost a decade. During this time, George was active in Little League as a coach and organizer. The family moved to Steinbach in 1965 where George took the position of Dietary, Housekeeping and Laundry Director for the Bethesda Hospital. George was an active member of the Legion taking the post of President from 1984 to 1985. He was also involved in the War Amps Association of Manitoba, working many volunteer hours and being President for a time. George loved to golf, curl and cross-country ski, many times with his sons and their families. In 1994, George married Martha Friesen and they had 19 and one half happy years. Together, they started a seniors' league for the Fly-in Golf Course and also one for the Steinbach Curling Club. George curled in the Masters Provincials twice. He was presented with the "Curler of Distinction" award by Curl Manitoba in 2010. George and Martha were able to enjoy several cruises, golf outings and trips with their family. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2009 and had a stroke in 2011. George passed away January 4, 2014, just a week short of his 89th birthday. George is survived by his wife, Martha; sons Wayne (Sandee), Ken (Sandi), Lorne, Craig (Vi), and Troy (Janice), eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary, and all his brothers and sisters. George will be remembered as a dedicated family man, a generous community-minded individual, a fun-loving and loyal friend. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, Manitoba. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030

  • Uncle George was a wonderful uncle. He and his wife, Martha took many trips into Winnipeg to share time with family. I admire how he and his wife were always very active with golf and he, with curling. He raised five wonderful sons and some have remained in Steinbach. To all the family I send my sympathy. You will have many wonderful memories to share and I hope to hear more of them. Bless you Martha for your supportive and loving nature with my uncle. You kept a smile on his face and love in his heart. Sharon - Posted by: Sharon Pauls-Rathore (niece) on: Jan 07, 2014

  • I was a teenager when George ran the Harvest Inn. He also set up a French fries kiosk on Main St. run by his brother Frank that was always very busy on weekends. I passed his house on my way to my grandparents, who lived just south of him. I marvelled at him when I saw him working on his house when it was being built. He had devised a holster on the end of a hammer handle that he attached to his left forearm so he could hammer the nail held in his right hand. I admired his grit and determination. I also remember the mural that Mary painted on the east side of the house that caused people to stop and admire her artistry. - Posted by: Walter A. Siemens (neighbor) on: Jan 07, 2014
