CARL WILLIAM WALLD August 26, 1919 ! January 3, 2014 At 94 years old, after a long, full life, Carl Walld passed away in Winnipeg, MB, after a short stay at the Grace Hospital. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Asta (Tommy) and his brother Fred. Carl is survived by his sisters Millie Ellis, Ella Baker, and Norma Burron (Ray). He will be remembered fondly by his children: Dave, John (Kelly), Barb (Greg), Marian (Don), and Randy (Monique), as well as his grandchildren: Robin (Dan), May, Laura, Carl, Daphne, Lyle, Kristin, Michael, and Trevor, and his new great-grandchild Sabine. He will also be remembered and missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Carl lived in Winnipeg for most of his life, but moved out to Bluff Creek, MB, during the Dirty Thirties. He and Tommy married on Valentine's Day in 1948 and they settled in Charleswood after the war. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before Tommy passed away in 1998. Carl worked hard for Paterson Grain for 35 years until he retired in 1985. He was a handy kind of guy who built and fixed grain elevators, cars, radios, and so much more. A veteran of the Second World War, Carl served in England with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He was awarded three medals for his brave service during the war. Carl was known for his passion for Ford vehicles, his larger than life personality, and his Charleswood houses, including the home he won on a TV show in 1967. In March of that year, the family flew to Vancouver where Carl won Windfall and was awarded a house, a big trip to Amsterdam, a snowmobile, and a car. Carl's family would like to thank the Winnipeg paramedics and firefighters who provided him with such quick assistance, and the staff on the third floor at the Grace Hospital for their care and support. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. A private family interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so can make a memorial donation in Carl's name to the Salvation Army. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • My wife Angela and I were very sad to hear of Carl's passing. I remember Carl fondly as a child growing up on Robindale Road and when I last saw him in 2008 after my father's funeral. It was fun to relive memories and hear Carl's stories. Our sympathy goes out to all the family at this time. - Posted by: Jim Fethers (Friend and Former Neighbor) on: Jan 16, 2014

  • We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle Carl. While I have spent much of my life outside of Winnipeg, I have had the privilege of many wonderful times and memories with Uncle Carl since childhood. His laughter and ability to tell stories will never be forgotten. Nor will his commitment to his family and his willingness to help those in need. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for his many years of assistance in helping mom with whatever needed fixing around the house. She will miss him dearly. Our love and prayers go out to the entire Walld Family. We celebrate his life with you, while offering our deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Darrell Baker and family (Nephew) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • We are saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle Carl and our condolences to all of the family. We will always have fond memories of uncle Carl and uncle Fred when they visited the farm in Medicine Hat. We always looked forward to their visits when they were building grain elevators in the area and the many stories and laughs they shared with us. I'm sure there will be a lot of stories now when he is together with Auntie Tommy and Uncle Fred. He will be missed by many! - Posted by: Roy and collette Millington (Nephew of Carl Walld) on: Jan 10, 2014

  • I am so saddened that we have lost Uncle Carl. I remember fondly the times spent with him and Auntie Tommy when going through Winnipeg, on my way to Alberta from Ottawa in the 60's. Distance hasn't allowed my visits to be very frequent in the years since then, but whenever I did manage to stop in Winnipeg, it was always a visit to remember and smile about later. I so admired his jovial spirit and forthright views. He lived life the way he wanted, and was an inspiration. - Posted by: marion cross (niece to carl walld) on: Jan 09, 2014

  • I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He was a very special person. He always had a smile and laugh when I was at Tommy's and his home. To his family I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Sharon Mooney (Friend to Marian) on: Jan 09, 2014

  • Sorry to hear of Carl's passing. I feel as if I have lost a Family Member. I worked with Carl & Fred & Fred Sr. for 5 years in the 50s. Dave & John were just starting school & Barbara was a toddler. We would drive out to Charleswood on Sun Evening to head back to SK or wherever we were working then. Tommy would always make a pot of Coffee, and have some Carrot Cake. I left Patersons in '59 and went Bus driving. Mr & Mrs Carl Walld Sr used to board my bus at times at the West End of Corydon. • Mr. Walld was my former landlord. I appreciate the kindness he showed towards me and my family. He will be fondly remembered with kindness. When I told him I was moving out, he shed a few tears and congratulated me on my new job at the time. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Rhonda C. (former tenant) on: Jan 08, 2014

  • I remember Uncle Carl mostly when he visited us at the farm in Medicine Hat and how much we enjoyed those visits. Dad always seemed to find him something to fix like a toaster or TV and he was so good at repairing anything electronic. Mom will very much miss her wonderful brother! We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Walld family. - Posted by: Brenda, Ed Surbey and family (niece to Carl) on: Jan 08, 2014

  • My heart is heavy as I consider all that Uncle Carl was to all of us and how much we will miss him. I remember how whenever he came to visit he would have the whole family gathered round to hear all the wonderful stories he would share. He had a sense of devotion, honour and duty that are often forgotten these days. I always admired him for his service to country and family, and his wonderful spirit, and wished that more people were like him. Though fond memories surround the thought of him, so does the deep sense of loss, but God will see us through even this. “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4 - Posted by: Kim Burron and Geoff Mackay (Niece) on: Jan 08, 2014
