EDNA VALGERDUR EINARSON February 7, 1915 - January 8, 2014 On Wednesday, January 8, 2014 Edna Einarson passed away at the Convalescent Home. Edna was born February 7, 1915 in an apartment on Sargent Avenue in Winnipeg, second of five children, to Margaret (Stevenson) and Sigurjon (Sam) Anderson, both of Icelandic descent. The family moved around Manitoba, lived in Lonely Lake (with the Huldafolk), and owned a store for a time in Amaranth. Edna and her father moved to Winnipegosis in 1930. In 1933, she married Olafur (Oli) Einarson, moved to Flin Flon and became mother to Oli's sons John and Malcolm. In 1935, Philip was born. All family members worked in an extended family business, commercial fishing in winter and construction in summer. The large extended family in Winnipegosis continued to be the focus of Easter vacations for years to come. Edna was predeceased by her older brother Clarence in 1918, her husband Oli in 1960, and, over the last 40 years, her parents, three sons, granddaughter Jennifer, and sisters Lillian, Clarice and Elin. As a young widow, Edna went to work for Hudson's Bay Mining & Smelting Co. (now Hudbay) in Island Falls, SK as a cook. From happy years there, she accepted a lateral move to the company's Snow Lake operation and worked there until her retirement in 1980, at which time she moved back to Flin Flon to live with John and Kay. In 1989, she returned to Winnipeg and lived once again on Sargent Avenue in Betelstadur. In February 2006, she moved to Thorvaldson's Care Centre; then in 2013, to the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. While there only six weeks prior to her passing, she thrived in the caring and attentive atmosphere of the home. Grandma and her family would like to take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude for every caregiver in her last years. She made a beautiful life for herself through her unfailing gratitude. Grandma Edna is survived by younger siblings Sigurjon (Siggi) Anderson and Bertha (Bill Ross) as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and the US; daughters-in-law Kathleen and Peggy; grandchildren Kathy (Bill Cheater), Larry and Gail Einarson, Lorne Einarson, Jeffrey (Einarson) Connery, Leslie Mitchell, Laura (Norbert Hansch), Kerry and Gabriele Einarson, Ward Einarson (Cheryl Bergner), and Kevin and Lillian Einarson. She expressed regular delight in her 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, and that love was returned to her ten-fold. Gram Edna's magnificent life was defined by her unwavering trust in God, her Christian faith and service, and her depth of kindness, humour, and goodwill. Though gone from our earth, her light will never leave our hearts and minds. Viewing for family and friends will take place at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg on Tuesday, January 14, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota Street, Winnipeg on Wednesday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. followed by interment at St. Vital Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3, or to a charity of your choice. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My memory Of Auntie Edna goes back to the early 40's when I spent summer holidays in Flin Flon, staying at her place, with visits to Phantom Lake and tennis matches. Also fondly remember her visits to our home in Winipegosis, and me in Edmonton, Calgary and Antigua. A fine lady whom I will sadly miss. - Posted by: Victor and Loretta Einarson (Nephew) on: Jan 11, 2014
