SOPHIE HAVELOCK (nee SCHIKURSKI) With much sadness the family announces the passing of Sophie Havelock on January 6, 2014 at the Health Sciences Centre. Sophie's memory will be forever cherished by her sisters Billie Ingram, Fronie (Harold) Floer, Agnes (Ed) Wiome, her brother Frank (Pat) Schikurski and sister-in-law, Eleanora Schikurski. She is lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Sophie was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Felicia Schikurski, brothers Jake and Johnny and sisters Regina Feicht, Katie Kaip and Mary Kreutzer. Sophie was born February 10, 1918 in Sels, Pierce County, North Dakota. The family moved to Canada and homesteaded in Minton, Saskatchewan. Sophie moved to Winnipeg where she worked most of her life at The Hudson Bay Department Store in charge of the Candy Department. She had a wonderful career there and traveled extensively to England, Europe, Las Vegas and went on many cruises with her friends. After retiring from The Bay, Sophie moved to Flin Flon and worked in the Family Inn with her sister Mary and brother-in-law, Rudy for five years, before she moved to Ontario where her brother Frank lived. She opened her own gift shop in Manotick, Ontario where she sold candies and arts and crafts. Sophie loved to sew and do arts and crafts and most of her merchandise was her own work. She and her sister Agnes, when they visited together would make dolls and door stops. Sophie moved back to Winnipeg and lived at 3535 Portage Avenue for many years with Rudy and Mary, and eventually Billie her sister. Sophie loved to walk and loved to dance, especially with her brother-in-law, Harold. Her work-out was doing the polka around her suite. She was a fun person and all the nieces and nephews adored her. She was much loved and will be dearly missed. A service honouring her life will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Sophie was a wonderful sister-in-law. She was there for any family member who needed help recuperating from surgery, an illness or during bereavement. She attended all family reunions and special anniversaries, pitched in when there was work to be done and then enjoyed the socializing and dancing after. I was fortunate to have spent a lot of quality time with Sophie, I will have many happy memories of a dear sister-in-law - Posted by: Eleanora Schikurski (sister-in-law) on: Jan 14, 2014

  • Aunt Sophie was a wonderful woman who always put family first. I was privileged to have her stop for an overnight or a few days stay at my place. The kids loved it when Aunt Sophie came, she always had time to play or listen to their stories. She will truly be missed but often remembered. Love you aunt Sophie. Rest in peace and God bless. - Posted by: Karen & Jerry Grywacheski (niece) on: Jan 14, 2014
