LUZ SANTIAGO SARMIENTO Luz Santiago Sarmiento, aged 81, passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2014 with her loving family by her side. She was born on July 23, 1932 in Penaranda, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from the University of Santo Tomas. Luz (Nanay) proudly taught at Penaranda Central School for 25 years before she immigrated with her family to Canada in 1980. In Canada, Nanay became a Filipino Language Teacher for the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers and retired from the Manitoba Home Care Services. Nanay was also a dedicated member of many organizations including the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg, St. Edward's Miraculous Medal Group and the Catholic Women's League. She was a loyal parishioner of St. Edward's Church, participated in the church choir and leading the prayers for the faithfully departed. Nanay is survived by her children; Sonny (Jisselle), Jun (Ivy), Leni, Lydia (Arthur), Leah (Ferd); and grandchildren; Melissa, Kyle, Julian, Kalvin, Ainsleigh, Jessie, Yasmin, Alyshia, Aidan, Karson, Ali, Isabel and Anabel. She is preceded in death by her husband Lingkod Sr. and daughter Lena. The Viewing (lamay) will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home on Thursday, January 16 and Friday, January 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Edward's Church, 836 Arlington St. on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Interment and reception will follow at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street.
