DR. IAN LIVINGSTONE REID
Date of Passing: Jan 12, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. IAN LIVINGSTONE REID It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. Ian Livingstone Reid of Selkirk, Manitoba, announces his passing on January 12, 2014 at the age of 82. He will be dearly missed by Ruth, his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, his three children Kim (Brenda), Bruce (Liz), and Patty (Craig), and his six grandchildren, Brody, Adam, Taylor, Kelsey, Ali, and Reid. He lived a full and rewarding life practicing medicine, raising his children Kim, Bruce, and Patty with his wife Ruth, involving himself in the Selkirk community and travelling around the country, actively participating and supporting his children, as they made names for themselves in the sport of water-skiing. In his 82 years, he accomplished many things, including such honours as the Order of Canada in 1983, being inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Water Ski Hall of Fame. His retirement from medicine in 1984 did not stop his enthusiasm for life. His passion for woodcarving, singing in the church choir, keeping up to date with technology, teaching, and giving help to others when needed, kept him inspired and happy. His involvement in the Selkirk community enriched the lives of so many. Ian's positive spirit and ability to find the best in others was something he came by naturally, leaving this earth knowing that he made a difference for the better and that he fulfilled his purpose in life of serving others, was a comfort and a blessing. He lived simply and gave much; he touched the souls of many and will be forever remembered as a man of great compassion and integrity. A celebration of Ian's life will be held at the Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Ave. in Selkirk on Saturday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at the church. The family would like to thank all who were involved in the compassionate care in his final days from the Health Sciences Centre to St. Boniface Hospital, Selkirk General and the staff of 4 West at the Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a contribution can be made to the Selkirk United Church or to the Selkirk and District Community Foundation. My condolences to the Reid family and all those who knew and loved Dr. Ian Reid. I had the privilege of knowing and working in the OR with his son Dr. Bruce Reid who always spoke with such respect for you all. He saved me from sickness on several milestone occasions. He was funny, he was smart, he was kind and he exuded a professional demeanor touched by compassion. I have been grateful for his care all of my life. He may have been one of a kind. He remains in my mind the ultimate protagonist who created the benchmark for all that a doctor should be. My sincere condolences to his family and his following. - Posted by: Laura (Foster/Kitchen) Tutlies (Patient and fervid admirerer. ) on: Feb 04, 2014

I just became aware of Ian's passing and my sincere condolences go out to the Reid family. I knew the family well during my many years practicing in Selkirk and Ian was a man that forever stays in your mind. A more sincere, funny, dedicated and helpful man you will not find--a true friend--he will be sadly missed - Posted by: Dr. Don Porter (friend and associate in Selkirk Medical Centre) on: Feb 02, 2014

Wow, I was shocked to hear about the great Ian Reid's passing. My condolences go out to all of you. I remember Ian from Beula Lake at tournaments that I had the opportunity to judge with him and at the Western Canadians he so proudly hosted right in his back yard. Where Bruce broke the Canadian jump record. He was the founder of water skiing in Manitoba and I was honored to know him. All of his kids were amazing people and skiers. Kim was smooth at slalom and Patty was in my age bracket so that explains why I turned to coaching and judging. I will always member your dad/husband with his hat and all his pins, he was amazing and will never be forgotten. I would have been there to deliver my condolences in person, but unfortunately I heard the news too late. I hope the memories of your great father/husband will help to ease your pain. - Posted by: Tracy Holms olafson (Waterski friend) on: Jan 22, 2014

I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Reid every summer at Bigstone Bay during my formative years and I am profoundly saddened by the news of his passing. There is an African proverb that says "when an elder passes, a library burns to the ground." In my experience Dr. Reid embodied the idea of the village elder like no man I have met since. He used his vast knowledge without vanity, only to inform, inspire, console and empower. He was constantly applying his craft to new creations. His curiosity, kindness, vitality and craftsmanship redefined my expectations of what my later years could look like. He was and remains an inspiration. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends. - Posted by: Nathaniel Davis (Summer Neighbour) on: Jan 21, 2014

The "young" Dr. Ian Reid was our family physican and made house calls when I was a young girl..., a very long time ago. He also invited "at risk" youth to his home for discussions, setting the example that there was "always hope" and a better way to live life to the fullest. I was one of these youths. I always thought of him, as one of the great men in my life. I no longer live in Selkirk MB..., and I no longer live in despair. He taught many of us ~ the courage to change, hope and the wisdom to know the difference. He left an everlasting impression in my life and will be always be remembered with gratitude and deep appreciation. In honor and respect of our paths crossing in this world. He lead by example..., to teach us to learn..., by doing. - Posted by: Jorunn McEvoy (Friend ) on: Jan 21, 2014

Hi Ruth, We all have so many fond memories of your Ian 'at the lake' in Bigstone, Ontario. He so inspired us with his kindness, love of life and seemingly endless curiosity for all activities, learning, and experience. Admired by all who knew him, Ian was a true explorer and much loved Bigstone neighbor to my father and mother, Edward and Louise Davis, brothers Edward, Jonathan and Harold. We spent many an enjoyable evening around the marshmallow bonfire under that awe inspiring Ontario August sky that is now home to Dr Reid and where he is no doubt engaged in conversation with the angels probably trying to straighten them out on the correct chemical composition of the heavenly bodies. Ian was a great guy! We'll miss him as we miss a lll the Bigstone gang! - Posted by: Jim Davis (friend) on: Jan 21, 2014

What a wonderful role model for someone growing up in the 50’s. I joined the Selkirk Seals back when the prerequisite was to swim across the Red River and back. I didn’t know how to swim (still don’t), but because I was so enthusiastic about hauling in the waterlogged hemp ropes and painting the streamed plywood skis, he said I could join provided I wear a life jacket at all times. He also told me that because I skated, skied and did track that my muscles would retain those memories for a lifetime. He gets full credit for my active lifestyle. He was connected to my family in many ways. What a dear soul he was. Back in the days, there were no coaches, trainers or sport psychologists; just drivers and watchers. We didn’t need them because we had Ian. He was our teacher, motivator, innovator, role model and even nutritionist; “live through a mouthful of the Red River and you’ll live forever”. Ian will be missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Brian MuirheadbBbbBrianBr (ggg) on: Jan 17, 2014

To Ruth, Kim, Bruce and Patty and families our deep and sincere sympathy. Ian was our family Doctor but more than that he and his family are dear and close fiends. All of the kind words and accolades set out in the guest book are deserved and could be expanded greatly. We have many fun memories of times together. Love John and Nancy and family. - Posted by: The Morrison Family (Friend ) on: Jan 17, 2014

Ian had a great influence on my life and is one of the people I truly admired and respected... I think of him as a Renaissance man as he was so good at so many things.. I remembering chasing badminton birds around the court thinking 'how does an old man like that make me work so hard'... my condolences to you all.. - Posted by: Brett Tinkler (Patient/neighbour) on: Jan 17, 2014

Coincidently, our Mom, Margret Steel (Craig) has just passed this November 28. Mom was a childhood friend of Ian's from Selkirk. His father was my grandma's doctor her whole life. The Reid family has always held a special place in the hearts of my mother's family...so much love and respect. Our family sends our deepest condolences and deepest gratitude to a most special Selkirk family. - Posted by: Cathy (Steel) Hunzinger (My mother ( Margret Craig) was a childhood friend) on: Jan 17, 2014

Our deepest condolences to Ruth and family. Dr. Ian Reid was the Surgeon in town that we were so proud of. I remember when my brother hurt his knee back in the early 70's, we did not have to go to Winnipeg. No, our Dr. Ian Reid performed the surgery and to this day my brother, who is almost 60 has no problems!!! He was before his time with technology. I had him as a surgeon for many surgeries and I always loved his green rubber boots and his kindness but toughness as to the better you get moving young girl the better you get back to school or work. Always caring and always there for his patients. We will miss these kinds of Doctors as there are few left!!!!. R.I.P. another angel in heaven. - Posted by: Teresa Wur Macumber and Raymond Macumber (long time patient) on: Jan 16, 2014

My condolences to the entire Reid Family. Dr. Reid was a generous soul and always treated neighbourhood children with such care and happy outlook. His efforts in making that ice slide each winter were enjoyed by so many kids, and we all felt somehow safer as if he were watching over us when we used it. I think he brought me good luck when fishing as he drove the ski boat past us on many occasions. I have always had great respect for him and his contribution to the community. May we all strive to be more like him. Rest in peace Doctor Reid. - Posted by: Richard Thomas (Former newspaper carrier) on: Jan 16, 2014

Here comes the time to say farewell to Dr. Ian Reid, a man I cherished and idolized as a child, respected and loved always. My heartfelt sympathies are lovingly sent to my equally cherished Auntie Ruth and my cousins. I leave you with this passage that I received upon the passing of Ian's sister, Blythe, may it console you in this difficult time. "Just as the sun will set and then rise with each and every dawn, the souls of those who lived life will eternally live on. Now that the sun has set on one so very dear, please know a soul who lived so well remains forever near." God Bless. - Posted by: Dawn Bjornson (Niece) on: Jan 16, 2014

Dear Ruth and family, so very sorry to read of Ian's passing. So many good memories growing up in Selkirk and at the Reid home with friends. Ian was such a positive person. I know what you are going through Ruth as my Gord passed in late November. Sorry I can't be at the service as I am visiting my daughter and family in Nanaimo. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. With my deepest sympathy, Madeline MacKenzie - Posted by: Madeline MacKenzie (Friend) on: Jan 16, 2014

Ian will be missed in so many ways. What a good man with a character like no other! Out of all of Ian's valued roles we knew Ian "the singer" best: church choir, Blue Grass (yes Ian I will give you the keys!) and a founding member of the Back Pew Boys. The images of Ian that are favourites are him getting down on a knee to talk to children at their level, his santa beard, his "have you found my finger ...(his homemade one) jokes, and singing with him and Ruth around their piano. As a physician who assisted at Selkirk Mental Health Centre, Ian treated all staff as colleagues and knew his nurses aides by name. HIs compassion, integrity and availability to all people knew no bounds. Our love to Ruth and compassion to the family. Always a friend Forever a mentor. Ian was one of the senior partners at Selkirk Medical Centre when we arrived in 1976. He was a caring physician, a skilled surgeon, and an honest and dependable colleague. Throughout his life in Selkirk, he became involved in many activities and organizations. Selkirk has lost one of its most distinguished citizens. Goodbye to a friend and mentor. - Posted by: Dr. Bruce A Ryckman and Dr. D. L. Ducheck-Ryckman (Colleagues, friends) on: Jan 16, 2014

It was Ian who patched me up physically in my childhood... It was Ian who patched me up spiritually in my adolescence... It was Ian who inspired me to follow a career as a paramedic and return to school... It was Ian who I often reflected back to while changing my career from prehospital care medicine to behavioural science... It is Ian that I will always remember with a smile and warm heart as I move through life hoping to be half the person he was. Thinking of the Reid family today and I will be there in spirit to celebrate an amazing life. - Posted by: Murray Ritchie (Patient and Friend) on: Jan 15, 2014

I remember Dr. Reid taking a group of us kids to see "Up with people" at the Wpg concert hall. Ian stood up and clapped his hands and sang along with them. Ian's enthusiasm just made every thing we did with him a great day out. Dr. Reid's close work with the children of Selkirk either an outing or meeting at his house on Saturdays helped to mold a few minds or two. Playing music and singing always so bold and always up and up. We will miss him. - Posted by: Donna Toews(Sveinson) (Patient/friend) on: Jan 15, 2014

Thoughts and prayers are with you at this trying time of loss. I will always remember Dr. Reid's gift of making us neighborhood kids feel special. He'd make an ice slide in the winter, I'm talking a slide that started at the back door of the house and all the way down to the river. Also...I'll always remember in the summer watching the family water ski; feeling such pride. Thank you - Posted by: Angie Laughlin nee: Lane (neighbor ) on: Jan 14, 2014
