CLAYTON TURNBULL With heavy hearts we announce that Clayton passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Riverview Hospital. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Millie, children Gary (Shelley), and Lynn (Chris); grandchildren Megan (Jon), Derek, Claire (Finley), Nick (Kim), and Bryce. Clayton is survived by his brother Ross (Marlene), sister Marilyn (Robert) and predeceased by his sister Eleanor (Don). Clayton was born September 6, 1931 in Stockton, Manitoba, and he was the oldest of four children. He lived on the family farm in Hilton, MB, a lifestyle he enjoyed, until he was 12 years old, when his family moved to Winnipeg. He loved sports and as a young man he played baseball, soccer and hockey and later curling and cross-country skiing. As a Boy Scout leader, he developed a love of the outdoors, for camping and canoeing; a love which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Many summer holidays were spent camping at Blue Lake, Ontario and fishing in pristine lakes throughout Manitoba. He began working at Investors Group when he was 19 years old and enjoyed 41 years there, advancing from the mailroom to Controller of Mutual Funds Administration. For many years he also served on the board of CMA and in 1974-75 he was the National President. At home, Clayton was creative in his workshop, always customizing or inventing some little storage box or pulley system to add ease and convenience to daily tasks. His workshop was also his wine-making room, where wine had been in production for over thirty years. Clayton was an independent and strong minded man, who was steadfast in his principles, loyal to a fault, and always on time or early. He enjoyed a healthy, active lifestyle with Millie. They were long-time members of the downtown YMCA, and most recently the Reh-Fit Centre. Clayton liked to tell stories. His favourites often ended with him saying "the world is just this small" as he held his thumb and finger together. And Clayton had seen the world! With Millie, he had traveled to all the continents except for Antarctica. Closer to home, he was proud to have driven his family to both the east and west coast of Canada, camping along the way. He was a long-time member of the Masons Northern Light Prince Rupert's Lodge #1, the Charleswood Ski Club and the Manitoba Naturalists. He served on many committees, including the United Way, the Investors Retirees, and was a leader in the development of the new Downtown YM-YWCA. In his later years Clayton watched sports avidly. He always supported the Blue Bombers, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Goldeyes and the Winnipeg Jets in the stands and via TV or radio. A memorial service for Clayton will be held Saturday, January 25 at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Nature Manitoba or Fort Whyte Alive. Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • I just found this today and wanted to express how much I enjoyed working with Clayton. He was my first long-term boss and what a gentleman he was. He exuded great values and family was always at the top. Millie, I'm sure he left all too soon for you, the children and the grandchildren. Blessings on you all. - Posted by: Irene Friesen (Assistant to the Assistant Comptroller of Investors Group) on: Dec 29, 2014

  • We always enjoyed our visits at the CMA conferences. Our sincerest condolences to Millie and family. Clayton will be missed as he touched so many lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Jerry & Ardis Mus (Brandon) - Posted by: Jerry & Ardis Mus (Fellow CMA) on: Jan 31, 2014

  • 1958-61, Clayton was Scout Leader with Jack Fellows, Our Savior's Winnipeg 15th. As a young scout I greatly looked up to and appreciated how Clayton guided, taught and enjoyed 'learning the ropes' with us. To this day, I also treasure how he kept 'Scouter Jack' who acted 1/2 kid himself, grounded so we'd all be safe. With you Millie and your family, I give much thanks to God for Clayton, his special gifts, his personable manner and many contributions to people! - Posted by: Rik Cherland (Young scout in Winnipeg 15th group, Our Savior's Lutheran, on Minto) on: Jan 23, 2014

  • My sincere condolences to Millie and family. I met Clayton winter camping with the boy scouts in the 1950's. Later in 1975 at Northern Light lodge #10. We enjoyed many evenings since. He shared his memories with everyone. His blessings will lift our thoughts for many years to come. God bless you Millie and family. - Posted by: Alex Rowes (Friend) on: Jan 23, 2014

  • Our thoughts go out to Millie and family. Clayton was the perfect example of the ideal Mason. As a Lodge we will miss him dearly, as a Brother I will miss his mentorship, his stories and his never ending smile. - Posted by: Richard Lacoursiere NOrthern Light Prince Rupert's Lodge#1 () on: Jan 21, 2014

  • I had pleasure of working with Clayton in my early years at IG in Mutual Funds Accounting and later on the United Way Committee for almost 20 years. He was a truly dedicated volunteer, helping in any capacity that was needed. I will miss his stories and his friendship. My sincere condolences to Millie and family. - Posted by: Rhonda Turner (Friend & Colleague) on: Jan 21, 2014

  • Clayton was always ready to share information about the best places that he thought "you must see". This could be the best restaurants in Canmore, Alberta, when dining out during ski week, or places to travel, or places he and Millie canoed. After sipping wine together and swapping camping experiences one always left with a smile. - Posted by: Wendy Joanisse (Charleswood Ski Club friend) on: Jan 20, 2014

  • I remember Clayton from cross country skiing and canoeing trips with the MNS and the Grey Hare breakfasts. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Lorne and Wanda Hyde (FriendI) on: Jan 20, 2014

  • We were so sorry to hear of Clayton's passing - our thoughts and prayers are with Millie and family. Clayton was a good husband and a great family man - what more could you ask. We loved it when Millie and Clayton passed through Calgary on their way to X-Country Ski in Canmore, and we got together for lunch and good conversation - reminiscing about old times and family fun on Harcourt St. in Sturgeon Creek. Your fond memories of Clayton will help you through this tough time - our sincere condolences to Millie and family. • I had the privilege of meeting and working with Clayton in the mid 70's when I joined Investors Group. He was a man who treated all of his colleagues the same - regardless of position - with kindness and respect. He enjoyed a good chuckle and sharing stories. In later years I had the good fortune to get to know Millie as well and enjoyed many laughs and good times with them at fishing derbies with the IG Game and Fish Club. I always admired Clayton and Millie's love of nature and travel and of course the great friends and companions that they were. Clayton was a very good person and will be missed. My sincerest condolences to Millie and her family. - Posted by: Judy Borus (Friend and former colleague) on: Jan 20, 2014

  • Mille and family - we were so sorry to hear of Clayton's passing. We still have lots of great memories particularly at the IG fish derbies and hunting out in Libeau marsh. He was always a great organizer and would be the first to volunteer when new leadership was needed. We will miss him but he will be forever in our thoughts. I'm sorry we will be away and miss his memorial service. - Posted by: Brian & Lowell Jones (Friend and coworker) on: Jan 19, 2014

  • Sorry to hear of Clayton's passing. We are on Vancouver Island and unable to attend the memorial service. Clayton was an asset to the CMA organization and at Investors. He was a true "outdoors" man. Our condolences to Millie and the family. - Posted by: Warren & Jocelyn Barnard (friend) on: Jan 19, 2014

  • Shelley and I are sorry for your loss Millie and family. Clayton you will be missed both at our lodge meetings, but also in and around the IG office for fundraising or social events. You haven't been there just lately, and we've noticed. Once in a while you meet someone who makes an impression, sets an example, and leaves you wanting to emulate their character. This was Clayton. - Posted by: Troy Blair (Lodge brother) on: Jan 19, 2014

  • Clayton was the most down to earth, friendly and competent person you could imagine. He was always ready with a smile and a greeting that you knew was sincere. His efforts with the IG Retirees group went largely unrecognized but it needs to be recognized. The same is true for his career at IG. Clayton enjoyed his life and family to the full. Not much more that you could ask. This will be a difficult time for Millie and the family but they will have many wonderful memories to sustain them. - Posted by: Glen Torgerson (Colleague and friend) on: Jan 19, 2014

  • Our Thoughts go out to the family... Clayton was a true gentlemen, a kind soul and fun to be around. Will always have great memories about him. I worked with Clayton for many years at Investors Group.... - Posted by: Al McDonald (Friend ) on: Jan 18, 2014
