ALICE (GENIA) SPRING (nee SLONOWSKI) It is with deep sadness and fond memories that Gordon Spring announces the sudden passing of his beloved wife, Alice on January 14, 2014 at the Grace Hospital. Alice was a kindhearted and respected matriarch to a large, extended family and faithful friend to many. She was much loved as a wife, sister, auntie, great auntie, cousin and friend. Alice was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mary, brother Mike, and sister Anne. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband Gordon, brothers Bill (Alice), Martin (Nancy), Peter, sisters Pauline and Helen, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Alice was born on July 27, 1925 at Garland, MB. She came to Winnipeg as a young girl to become a hairdresser and started her career in Pine River, then moved to Flin Flon, Toronto and Eaton's Beauty Salons in Vancouver and Winnipeg. She married Gordon, a R.C.M.P. member, in Dauphin. Alice loved people! Being in the company of Alice always resulted in laughter and fun. She was the consummate storyteller and was also known to tell the best jokes! She enjoyed travel, connecting with relatives in the Ukraine and Poland that the family in Canada hadn't seen for 95 years, attending the Flin Flon luncheons, visiting with friends and family, giving the young members of our family their first haircuts; and she definitely loved to play her lucky nickels at the casino. Her puffed wheat cake, open-faced blueberry pies and headcheese were always greatly anticipated at every family gathering, as were the Ukrainian Christmas feasts lovingly prepared in her home with all of our traditional favourites. She treasured each one of us...from the oldest to the youngest...and took a genuine interest in our lives. Thank you, dear Alice, for all the beautiful memories you have left us. The Rt. Rev. Gregory Mielnik will conduct a funeral service on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Our time knowing this amazing girl in Flin Flon was short. Our Shirley was also a hairdresser, but not in Flin Flon. We knew Alice through other acquaintances and dances such as the (Lobstick?) and people at work. Shirley and Alice lived together in Flin Flon for a year after I left to join the RCAF in 1953. Didn’t see much of her again until after 1960 and then occasionally later when we visited my sister Margaret in Winnipeg and went to Flin Flon reunion luncheons. So sad to not have her stories and humor available any more. Gordon, we don’t know what else we can say. • Uncle Gordon, We are so sorry to hear that our dearly loved Auntie Alice has passed away to Heaven. Auntie Alice was the GLUE that held the Slonowski family together. She was an amazing caregiver, a great cook and she loved to have fun. She genuinely cared about all of us, even our children...how cool is that! She made sure we all stayed connected. For us she was hand's down the Aunt who left the biggest lasting impression. I remember at a very young age going to visit Winnipeg on summer vacation and staying at her apartment. She "dolled" Susan and I up with her wigs, make-up and jewelery. She made us feel very special and showed us too with plenty of hugs and cuddles. As we got older she shared her favourite recipes. To this day I am still using her icing recipe made from chocolate pudding and Dream Whip. I like to think that it was Auntie Alice's good traits that rubbed off on me because I too love to cook, talk, entertain, watch sports and have fun. When you got married, we were so happy for our Auntie Alice. We loved your visits to Ontario as there was always lots of conversation, laughter and stories. Never a dull moment when Auntie Alice "blew into town". Aunty Alice was ONE OF A KIND and we are lucky to have had her this long in our lives. She has left us with many memories that we will treasure. - Posted by: Sandra Smith and Susan Idzenga (Nieces) on: Jan 20, 2014

  • We were so sorry to hear of Alice's passing. We have so many fond memories of Alice's visits to Vancouver and while she was living in Vancouver with Aunty Jean. Through the years her visits with friends, her brother Peter and then Gordon were always much enjoyed. We always will remember her wonderful laugh and great sense of humour. Our thoughts are with you Gordon. - Posted by: Margaret Hoar, Carol Snoeck, husband Peter and families (Cousins ) on: Jan 19, 2014
