MICHAEL A. J. GOTTLI After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Michael passed away with dignity on January 17, 2014 at the age of 49 years. He was predeceased by parents Jozsef (1996) and Katalin (1996), and is deeply missed by brothers John in Winnipeg and Joseph (Julia) in St. Catharines, Ontario, together with nephew Joseph (Kate) and great-nephew Michael, and nieces Katherine and Kristina, as well as cousins in Winnipeg, Calgary and Hungary. Michael graduated from Charleswood High School where he appeared in various theatrical productions and produced and appeared in a number of movies and shorts produced with his friends. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the Fine Arts program at the University of Manitoba, where he pursued his interest in theatre and the arts by appearing in numerous Black Hole Theatre Productions. During university studies, he acquired an interest in writing and stand-up comedy and appeared in various Fringe Festival productions, both as a solo act or in an ensemble. Following his dream, he left university prior to graduating and set out to earn his living as a professional actor and comedian. He appeared in Guy Maddin's productions of "Tales from the Gimli Hospital" and "Archangel" and had roles in "Mob Story" and various other movies, along with appearances in TV shows such as "The Challengers", "Kids in the Hall" and "Maniac Mansion" among others. He also appeared in various TV commercials for "Wintario" and is still remembered for his appearance in the Coffee Crisp commercial ("How do you like you coffee? Crisp"). After leaving university, Mike soon joined Yuk Yuk's comedy circuit and appeared in comedy clubs across the country. It was during one of his trips back west that an encounter with a moose in northwestern Ontario in July 1994 put an end to his dream. "After the Moose (ATM)", as he often said, his life changed but his humour and ability to entertain did not. Although confined to a wheelchair and care home, Michael continued his interest in comedy and music, and he brought joy to staff and residents around him. Though challenged in speech, his memory was intact and would often correct one's recollections using his Dynovox. Sincere thanks to all who cared for him ATM, particularly the ICU in Sudbury Hospital, the staff at Poseidon Care Centre and the St. Boniface Hospital. At Michael's request, cremation has taken place and a private family service was held. Interment of cremated remains took place in the family plot in Assumption Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Brain Injury Association or the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • I knew Michael in high school. We weren't close friends though we would cross paths often through our mutual interest in drama. In support of the many testimonies offered I can say that Mike was a truly a decent guy. I can also attest to his creativity and am saddened by the tragic loss of his life. If TM had not happened who knows how successful he could of become. But regardless of TM, he was successful as a human being and an example worth consideration. - Posted by: Jeff Becker (Drama Club) on: Oct 08, 2017

  • Mike and I were friends in stand-up in Toronto in the late eighties/early nineties. He was a decent man, and always a creative and forward looking artist. We lost touch ATM when he returned to Winnipeg, and I was saddened to learn of his untimely death. He had more than his share of difficult cards dealt, but he always managed things with dignity and humour. My best wishes to his family and loved one. - Posted by: David Langlotz (former colleague) on: Mar 06, 2014

  • In the mid 80's a fledgling local comedy circuit was taking root. I morphed my Videon interview program to the Comicaze Club and Mike was brought in by Dave Pinsky and Kerry Talmage. The premise became a pre-Shandling Gary Shandling show with scenes 'behind the scenes' as well as played to the camera. Mike had the idea to become the protagonistic Biff Mason, a chain smoking, gruff, hung-over station manager, always at odds with our ensemble except of course for 'Misty' around whom he would fumble and bumble in a puppy-dog crush mode. What a genius at improv and a truly wonderful man he was. - Posted by: Marty Gold (comedy partner) on: Feb 22, 2014

  • Whenever I had chance to visit Mike he would give me instant recognition, and with his big smile, would inquire about my family, since we were former neighbours. He never lost his spark, nor sense of humour; and had excellent recall. After his loss of speech, we would 'talk' on notepad just the same. I am so sorry to learn of his passing and he will be missed. Our sincere condolences to John, Joseph & Julia and the rest of the Gottli family. God Bless you Michael. Vernie. - Posted by: Vernie Price (Family friend.) on: Feb 08, 2014

  • I knew Mike from high school and University days, played rugby, appeared in plays, class projects and partied with him. He was an unforgettable friend, and while I hadn't seen him for years, I'd often thought about him. I sat at his bedside after his car accident and coma, and to be honest, I lost faith he would ever regain consciousness. His good friend Angela, never lost faith, sat by his side, talked, read and watched movies with him. I have no doubt that she played a critical role in his regaining consciousness, something that wasn't at all likely after months in a coma. After he regained consciousness, Mike faced his impediments and challenges with a smile and courage. Mike, you will never be forgotten by those who knew you, and will be missed. - Posted by: Tim Martin (Friend) on: Jan 25, 2014

  • I had the opportunity to visit with Michael when he was at Poseidon (ATM). I would enjoy hearing his stories about his experiences as a comic on the road, including having Brett Butt as a roommate, as well as talking about the poster of the "Tales from the Gimli Hospital" hanging in his room. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Chris Caswill (Friend) on: Jan 23, 2014

  • Sorry to hear of Michael's passing. His work with Guy Maddin (especially Tales from the Gimli Hospital) are some of the most iconic in Candian cinematic history. His performances were always "in the moment", something every performer in the world strives for, and for Michael it came naturally. He will be missed. - Posted by: Lars Lehmann (None) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • I had the pleasure of working with Mike on the famous Coffee Crisp commercial. In the three days or so that I got to know him, I found him an absolute joy to be around. And my only disappointment was that I never got to work with him again after that. My sincere condolences to the Gottli family. - Posted by: Nick Johne (Colleague) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • A very funny and original thinker. Mike and I spent a lot of time together at U of M and later and I will always have fond memories of our escapades. A true entertainer. - Posted by: Jay Ashmore (Friend) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • Mike & I moved to Toronto together in 1990, and lived together for 2 years. We remained friends after our breakup. I remember how shocked I was at his accident, and how shocked I am now at his passing. God Speed, Mike. - Posted by: Sandi Jones (old friend) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • My sisters and I grew up across the street from Michael and enjoyed his sense of humour. My Mom lent him her Grace Hospital nurses cape for a school play once when he played Dracula. I took the bus to U of M with him and laughed all the way. He had a gift for bringing life, fun and laughter to whoever he was with. Our condolences to Michael's family. May God comfort you in your loss. - Posted by: Gloria Duncalfe (nee Howson) (Friend) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • My brother Kerry and Mike had many great times on and off stage . I myself had lots of fun and great times with Mike. A great man will be missed. - Posted by: Rod (Kerry) Talmage (Great friend ) on: Jan 22, 2014

  • When I was in my 20s, I worked part time at Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club, when Mike was one of the local comedians performing there. I loved his comedy, but more importantly I really enjoyed Mike himself. He was smart, hilarious, and a sweetheart. I loved it when Mike would pop into the office, and make me laugh with the emphatic way he said "MMMIKE!!" I only knew him for about a year, but he made an indelible impression on me. My condolences to his family; may he rest in peace. - Posted by: Mariam Bernstein () on: Jan 21, 2014

  • To John and Joe and your families -- sincere condolences on the loss of your dear brother Michael. Even thought the ocean separates us when I saw it I felt compelled to let you know that even a friend from along ago is thinking of you. You should know from no more sorrow. • Sincere condolences to John and Joe Gottli and families. Michael was an impressive man even after his injury. I recall his wit and humour even with the use of his Dynovox. - Posted by: Vincent Bueti (Friend) on: Jan 21, 2014
