LOU NELLE MERRITT (PETERS) Lou Nelle Merritt, a devoted servant of God, wife, mother, teacher, writer, and friend, passed away at the age of 87 on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Victoria General Hospital following a brief illness. Nelle was born and raised in Texas. She graduated with a History degree from Abilene Christian College, where she met and married Roy Merritt, a Canadian. A true team, they spent their lives together establishing and strengthening churches of Christ and supporting Christian education in Ontario and India. She and Roy lived in Winnipeg for a few years, but returned to southern Ontario in their senior years. After Roy's passing, Nelle returned to Winnipeg to be with family in July 2013. Nelle was a talented journalist who wrote and edited for a number of newspapers, as well as religious, corporate and government publications. She was a bright and inquisitive person with an amazing range and depth of knowledge. Her genealogical research has provided family roots and an endless store of colourful anecdotes and historical insights. Nelle was a devoted follower of Jesus with a humble servant heart. Her Texas warmth and hospitality and her lively sense of humour drew friends from all walks of life wherever she went. She deeply loved her children and grandchildren and took pride in their accomplishments. She is survived by her sister, Mary Belle Brown (Tom) of Salado, Texas, her daughter, Diana Turner (Wayne) of Winnipeg, and her son, David Merritt of Atlanta, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy D. Merritt, and her son, Stephen Merritt. Her memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 26 at the Central Church of Christ, at 170 St. Mary's Road. Interment will take place later this year in the family plot in Beamsville, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Great Lakes Bible College in Waterloo, ON or Victoria Hospital, Winnipeg. A special thanks to the skilled and compassionate staff of Emergency, ICU, and Floors 4 and 5 of Victoria Hospital for your excellent care.
