CHARLES RAYMOND GLEDHILL Passed away with his family by his side on January 22, 2014 at the Riverview Health Centre. He was born June 23, 1935 in St. James, Manitoba. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mavis (Johnson), sons Larry (Lisa), Jeff (Debbie), Allan (Marie) and Scott (Tara), grandchildren Clinton (Keri), Vanessa (Cori), Dale, Kevin, Nicola, Justin, Amber, Garrett and Allyssa, great-grandchildren Parker and Carson and stepgrandchildren Jessica (Tyson) and Isabella, and brothers Ronald (Ruby), Allen (Sylvia), Bill and sisters Shirley (Elson) and Joan (Russ) and special niece Elaine. He was predeceased by his parents Roland and Ethel (Crook) and parents-in-law James and Eva (Braun) Johnson. Chas loved his family and his planes. Starting as a young lad he was a member of the 402 Winnipeg squadron High School Air Force, spending two summers in Abbotsford and Watson Lake. His love of flying continued with him through his whole life and earning his pilots license and Float Plane designation was one of his proudest moments! He was also only the 19th member to join the Western Canada Aviation Museum, traveling to many barns and swamps to help retrieve old aircraft for the museum. Chas worked for the CNR for 40 years retiring in 1994. He also loved camping, traveling, the Blue Bombers, snowmobiling, biking, summers and winters at the cabin and bird watching. He especially loved and spoiled his four sons, his grandchildren and will be sadly missed by all of them. A special thanks to all the amazing staff at Riverview Health Centre for their loving and compassionate care of our father and his family during our brief stay! A Celebration of Chas' life will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Assiniboine Park Butterfly Fund for the Butterfly House. Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • Dear Chas, it has been about 6 weeks since we said goodbye and not a day has gone by that I don't think about you. I have such an overwhelming feeling of loss my dear brother, but I know you will be watching over all of us until the day we will meet again. Love you forever - Posted by: Shirley(Gledhill) Baker (Sister) on: Mar 08, 2014

  • I wrote this poem as a tribute to the life of my father and want to share it with all of you. It's aptly titled, Goodbye Charlie... Today we all gathered to celebrate dads life, With friends, our family, and our mom his loving wife. Adventures, the challenges, not one did he fail, His journeys became stories, not one was a tale. Had the strength of 10 horses, a will like a bear, The memory of an elephant, as most would know not easily scared. Like Jesse James, John Wayne, toughest hombre's of the West, Stacked up beside my dad they were only second best. Had a passion for airplanes, knew each one that passed by, Those eyes always watching, scanning the open sky. Forty years with the railway, worked hard for his due, Need something fixed right, he was the man for you. Enjoyed mother nature, had a love for fresh air, Spending time with his family, no worries not a care. Worked hard teaching his boys to be strong and proud, To look after themselves, to stand out in a crowd. He's now the brightest star way up in the sky, Looking out for his family with that watchful eye. We'll miss those stories of life that you oh so loved to tell, From all of us here dad, we bid you farewell. May you rest in peace... The Gledhill's - Posted by: Scott (Son) on: Jan 30, 2014
