ERIK GORDON THORDARSON
Date of Passing: Jan 24, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryERIK GORDON THORDARSON Peacefully, on Friday, January 24, 2014, Erik, beloved brother of Signy and Karl, and brother-in-law of Simone, passed away at Riverview Health Centre. He will be deeply missed by Nigel and Dart; as well as by his nieces; nephews; and countless friends, with special mention of the McCullough family, whose love and support means so much to all of us. He was predeceased by his father David; mother Doreen; and brother Jon. Born on November 2, 1955, Erik lived his whole life in St. James, attending Linwood Elementary School, Deer Lodge Junior High and St. James Collegiate. In his youth, he excelled at hockey and lacrosse, and spent many happy hours skating at Deer Lodge Community Club. Over the years, Erik always enjoyed seeing old friends and catching up on new developments. His memory of growing up in St. James was unsurpassed and his ability to make his old friends laugh by recounting tales of past exploits was legendary. Many of Erik's closest friends had known him since elementary school. These friendships flourished because he had such a big heart and always wished the best for everyone. Towards the end, Erik showed tremendous courage and faced his battle with cancer head on. His biggest concern was not his own suffering but with that of his family and friends whose hearts were breaking during his final days. In compliance with Erik's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Instead, donations to his charities would be appreciated: Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3, donations online at winnipeghumanesocietydonor.ca or CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9, donations online at cancercarefdn.mb.ca. The family wishes to thank the staff of CancerCare Manitoba at Grace Hospital, particularly Dr. Pat Harris, for their kindness, caring and compassion. Erik was like a brother to me. No one could make me laugh like Erik and nobody ever will again. He was only 58 when he died. He should have had many more years left. Years he would have spent regaling his friends with stories, watching his beloved Jets develop into a contender, going to agility class with Sig and Jet, arguing with Karl and I, visiting Marnie and the kids on Friday evenings and growing old with all of us. But he can't. He's gone and he's not coming back. So we are left to carry on, remember all the good times, prop each other up when we need support and think of Erik free of pain and living large. And I do. Rest easy brutha...I'll see you on the other side. - Posted by: Cam McCullough (friend) on: Jan 15, 2015

I have many good memories of high school with Erik. My dad was a caretaker at Deer Lodge Community Club and Erik was one of his favourites. Rest in peace old friend. - Posted by: John Allardyce (High school friend) on: Feb 01, 2014

Signy and family, how all his agility friends have missed Erik's presence at classes, cheering on his beloved Nigel and Dart and his other four and two-legged friends. The Jets' flags are flying at half mast. Love Lois and Marlie - Posted by: Lois and Marlie Melville (Friend) on: Feb 01, 2014

So sorry to read of Erik's passing. I was very happy to see my old school pal at the Linwood reunion. We shared a laugh or three and remembered better times. I will always smile when I think of Erik holding court at the Big A. You always knew where he stood on any issue or topic. Strong opinions eloquently expressed .Be free old friend. - Posted by: Lloyd Dole (Friend) on: Feb 01, 2014
