Born: Jul 21, 1927
Date of Passing: Jan 28, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDONALD WILLIAM REID Peacefully on the morning of January 28, 2014, Donald Reid, beloved husband of Margaret for 58 years, passed away at the age of 86. Besides his wife he is survived by three children, Robynne (Greg), Jeff and Andrea (Abe) three grandsons, Jason (Janice), Jamie and Zach, also great-grandchildren Evan and Allison, in-laws Phamie (Dave), Jack (Eva), Alec (Hazel), numerous nieces and nephews and close friends Norv and Arl. He was born July 21, 1927 on the family farm at Dugald and except for a short period in Winnipeg, lived his entire life in Dugald. He worked in the insurance industry for many years including 32 years with Canadian Surety. He served on many boards and committees including the Ag Society, Oakbank Credit Union, Kin-Place, Dugald United Church, Centennial Committees, Dugald Project Committees and many more. He loved playing and watching baseball, hockey and curling. He was an avid golfer, loved playing crib and was a very good crazy 8's player. He was a longtime supporter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers holding season tickets for 35 years and was thrilled to attend the season opener in the new stadium in 2013. After his retirement in 1992, he and Mom began traveling but not too far as he didn't trust anyone to attend to his garden. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will follow at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice. We feel truly blessed to have had you as our father and pray for the strength to carry on in a world without you. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). I had worked with Don at Canadian Surety from 1961 until his retirement in 1992 and have many fond memories of all those years working with him. I am sorry that I was not able to attend the service as I am in Texas. My condolences to Margaret and family. - Posted by: Ann Early (co-worker) on: Feb 10, 2014

Any and all memories of Mr. Reid left you with thoughts of admiration and respect. He was a great neighbor who loved sharing produce from his garden come harvest time. He left a great legacy of community spirit through example which will live on through his adult children and the many generations to come bearing his last name. Thank you for being an important part of my childhood. Thanks for being such a good friend to our family. Bye for now and say hi to Mom. - Posted by: Terry Marx (Old family friend and neighbour in Dugald) on: Feb 02, 2014

Don looked after our bonding account for years. He was a real gentleman, soft spoken, thorough, polite, a real class act. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Fred Wright (Business customer) on: Feb 01, 2014

Without question Don was special and his contribution to the insurance industry he served so well and honourably for such a long time was significant. A person of integrity and I am so fortunate to have been a beneficiary of a relationship which I value to this day. I thank God for allowing our paths to cross. - Posted by: Garry Harland (Friend) on: Jan 31, 2014

Margaret, I know that Don's life has had a great impact on so many people, and as old Boy Scout of the 1st Dugald Troop, which he was our leader. I know that his leadership with the youth of Dugald has had a large impact over many of us. His involvement with The Springfield Boys Parliament, which have left a lasting impression on us, even to this day. He was a man who had a gift of helping others. May God Bless you and your family. I had the pleasure of working with Don for many years when he was a director of Oakbank Credit Union and I was an employee there. Don was one of those rare individuals who always looked at things with an open mind and was never afraid to use one of his greatest gifts: common sense. He will be truly missed. My condolences to Margaret and his family. - Posted by: Clarence Abrams () on: Jan 31, 2014

I always valued Don as a friend and felt he was one of the true gentlemen in the Insurance Industry. Although competitors with rival companies, we always shared information and ideas. Like Don, I am a long time Bomber season ticket holder and we always found time to talk football. We are vacationing in Southern California and so I won't be able to attend Don's service. I will miss you Don. - Posted by: Ken Mitchell (Friend iIn the Insurance Industry) on: Jan 31, 2014

I worked with Don at Canadian Surety in the late 50's and early 60's and always found him to be a true gentleman. I had a lot of respect for him. He spoke very highly of his wife and daughter, Robynne. Every time I drive down Lagimodiere and see the Dugald exit, I remind my husband of the man I used to work with who lived in Dugald and what a long drive it must have been for him every day to come into the city. It was a pleasure to work with him and offer my very sincere condolences to his wife and family. I am sure he will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Pam Ruby (Moore) (Co-worker) on: Jan 31, 2014
