DR. CRAIG R. HILDAHL
Born: Aug 28, 1951
Date of Passing: Jan 30, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. CRAIG R. HILDAHL, MD. 1951 - 2014 With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father, Afi, Brother, Uncle and Friend - Dr. Craig Hildahl - on January 30 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 62. Craig was born on August 28, 1951 to Vern and Evelyn Hildahl. He attended the University of Manitoba, where he was a member of the Bison football team. Craig graduated with a science degree and went on to complete his medical degree in Family Medicine. Craig met the love of his life, Wendy, while at university and they married in Langruth, Manitoba on July 19, 1975. Craig began his career as a family doctor, which he was so passionate about. He compassionately cared for thousands of patients over the years and took a genuine interest in the lives of all of his patients, far beyond the basic medical care. He truly loved going to work every day and making a difference in the lives of those he cared for. Craig loved spending time with his family, and consistently demonstrated that family was of utmost importance to him. There are many fond memories from childhood family vacations including several trips to Disney World, Vancouver, California and South Dakota. In recent years the family traveled to Iceland, where they were able to reconnect with family. They also traveled to Norway, where they visited the town of Hildal, where Craig's relatives originated. This was a highlight of the vacation for him. Craig was truly a special person. He was the pillar of strength to his entire family, close friends and patients. His kind, compassionate nature, amazing sense of humour and easy going attitude are some of the things we will miss the most. Craig instilled the value of hard work and determination in his children and was incredibly proud of their success and accomplishments. Craig is survived by his wife Wendy; his children Kristin (Michael), Stefan (Aisling) and Erik (Alexis); grandson Gavin; brothers Keith (Ellen) and Wayne (Rita); sisters-in-law Johanna (Ken) and Patricia; numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends. Craig was predeceased by his brother Ken (Judy) and his parents Vern and Evelyn. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. The family is very grateful for the compassionate care by the staff at St. Boniface Hospital on 4AS and the palliative care ward. A celebration of Craig's life will be held on Saturday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Grant Memorial Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Craig's memory to the "Dr. Craig and Wendy Hildahl Scholarship Fund" for the Faculty of Medicine, care of Donor Relations, University of Manitoba, 179 Extended Education Complex, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 2N2. I think like many people, who were fortunate enough to have Dr. Hildahl as their doctor, like I've lost a best friend. A person who cared and listened, that was always there for me. Dr. Hidahl was my doctor for over 30 years. Longer in my own mind as I am only learning of his passing now. Deepest regards to his family and friends and his patients. He was loved and respected, and he will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Donna Sawatzky (Patient) on: Jul 22, 2019

Craig was my family doctor from when he had his office on St. Mary's Rd. 1n 1976, till when I left Canada in 1990. After spending my professional career overseas for so many years, I am returning to Canada, and was hoping to meet up with Craig again. I am saddened to hear of his passing, and would like you to know that of all the doctors I have met, no one came close to matching skills or that sense of humanity he had. May God bless his soul. - Posted by: Laurence William Cyr (Former patient) on: Jul 10, 2018

Dear Wendy and family, I am so, so sorry to hear about Craig's death. He was such a wonderful guy - truly a friend to all! I still fondly remember our class's 25th reunion and how you two so graciously opened your home to everyone for the party "after the party." Thanks for the memories. Praying for you! - Posted by: Susan (Bowman) Canham (Classmate, U of M, MD Class of 1978) on: Aug 19, 2014

My deepest sympathy and condolences goes out to the Hildahl family. My heart is filled with such regret upon receiving the news of Dr. Hildahl's passing. Dr. Hildahl has been my family's doctor since I was 12 years old. My family adored him and have nothing to say but good things about this man. We knew him as a kind, big-hearted person who cared a lot about his patients and their well being, more than any other doctor I've encountered. He was a great role model and was the kind of person the world needed more of. Throughout the years he made visiting the doctor's clinic a pleasant experience. He even continued to give me lollipops knowing I was old enough to not receive them anymore. I truly thank him for being the great doctor he was and for showing my family great care and concern for our well-being. It was a blessing and privilege for my family to have met this amazing doctor and it saddens us that he has passed away too soon. God has taken him to a better place where I know he will continue to watch over his family, friends, and patients. We will forever miss him. - Posted by: Mariam Seradilla (Patient) on: Mar 12, 2014

Very sad to learn about the death of a great man and a great human being at such a young age. He had so much more to give to society. I started seeing Dr. Hildahl in about 1995. He was taking care of not only my physical illness but used to counsel on overall welfare of the family as well. He was quite unique. He was thorough and went out of his way to help. Once or twice I got phone calls from him about my test results. He was so caring. Soon my sons and other relatives became his patients. He not only treated my sons, he encouraged them in their respective career choices. He was a rare doctor and a very rare human being. We will miss Dr. Hildahl greatly. - Posted by: Kazi Shamsuzzaman, Shahina Shamsuzzaman (Patient (Kazi)) on: Feb 10, 2014

My heartfelt prayers go out to you and your family Wendy. I first met Dr. H. at Grand Beach medical centre in summer of 1980 for an infection of an accident laceration. Little did he or I know that this would lead to a lifelong personal journey as from that point I was blessed with Dr. H.'s God given talents. Thank you for supporting his life and that of your children. May God bless you in every way, every day, by His way. - Posted by: Barry Kibsey (patient/friend) on: Feb 09, 2014

Dr. Hildahl was my Dr. and I was so shocked when I heard of his passing. I am now in PS for the Winter and was looking forward to seeing him in the Spring and unfortunetaly it's not going to happen. Had we been there, my wife and I would certainly be attending his funeral. He was the most caring and personable person you could find - felt that you were the only patient he had. He certainly had that charisma and a personality that one wished that we could all possess. What a great person he was and no doubt is leaving a legacy to his family. Our sympathies to his wife and family and we are all part of this family too amd grievning with you. He will be missed by all who had the priviledge to have known this wonderful beautiful human being - as close as one can get to being a God or an angel. - Posted by: curtis wold (patient) on: Feb 08, 2014

Dear Wendy and family. On behalf of our family we wish to express our sorrow for your loss. Over the years we have appreciated your family and the great friendship Christine and Kristen have. All our kids were the same age and we were surprised to find that Craig's month and year of birth are the same as John's. Craig was a wonderful person and John enjoyed working with him in hockey and the other times they saw each other. Vera enjoyed her association with your family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We were very impressed with the wonderful feelings expressed today in the service. We wish you all the best. Our sincere sympathy to the Hildahl family. Dr. Hildahl was our physician for 32+ years. He was the most incredible human being we know - brilliant, kind, gentle, respectable, and you always had the feeling that family & friends were the most important things in his life. To his patients he always made you feel better, no matter what your medical challenge was, just by being in his presence. He made you feel safe and greatly cared for. He knew all the best specialists to refer you to. There will never be another like him. Now, in our golden years I wonder what's to become of us without his care. This is such a huge loss of a wonderful human being and a doctor who will never be forgotten by his grateful patients. God Bless, rest in peace Doctor Craig. We were so sorry to hear about the loss of Dr. Craig Hildahl. He was a wonderful physician and a kind and caring human being. Our family have been his patients since he took over Dr. Singer's practice when he retired. In addition we lived in the same neighborhood. We recently relocated to BC and before we moved Dr. Hildahl spent a lot of time ensuring that our family's health concerns would be adequately addressed and that our caregivers were fully aware of our complex medical history. Our thoughts are with his family. - Posted by: John and Vivian Sandberg (Neighbors and long time patients (35 + years)) on: Feb 06, 2014

I am so sad to hear of the passing of my Doctor. I was always hoping he would return to work. I have been worried about him for several years now. I am sure that all of his patients worried about him. When you have a special Doctor, like Dr. Hildahl, you feel very lucky. I too have been unwell for several years and I had a worsening of my illness when he was off in 2008. I could barely hang on, until my Dr. returned in June of that year. Well, he listened, he believed and he got right on it. That's what he did. He indeed went above and beyond for me and many others. I will miss him. Condolances to his Family. I never read the obits and was completely and utterly shocked to see his today. I had just been thinking this past week that I should stop by the office to see if he was back at work. He was such a wonderful doctor and I don't know how I will find another doctor. You knew he was well loved and respected by his patients when comments posted (doctor reviews) would 99% of the time say he was worth waiting 1-2 hours past scheduled appt. times. Dorie and I send our condolences to the family. We will miss him greatly, he was such a great Doctor. When I was very sick in 1995, he never missed a day that he came by and checked on me. We had many Biblical discussions and I believe he always enjoyed it. God Bless and keep looking up. Bill - Posted by: Bill and Dorie Giesbrecht (Our Family Doctor and Great Friend) on: Feb 01, 2014

My family moved to Winnipeg in 1983 and were lucky enough to have Dr. Hildahl as a physician. Over the years Dr. H. provided the best possible care to all of us. He always took the time to offer advice whether dealing with physical issues or emotional issues. I feel we are not only losing a very special physician but a caring friend. On behalf of myself and my girls, I would like to convey our prayers & sympathy to the Hildahl family. Surely there will be a special place in heaven for such a gifted man. - Posted by: Karen Welch (Patient) on: Feb 01, 2014

When I first moved to Winnipeg in 1981, Craig was suggested to me by an intern at the Victoria emergency when I went thee suffering from the flu. I was impressed at our first meeting, not simply by his thoroughness as a professional, but by his caring attitude that went beyond the simply physical. One of the few medical professionals who truly understood and practiced a holistic approach to wellness. Over the years, I felt I came to know him quite well and I will certainly miss that relationship as well. I have always thought of him as an excellent example of my ideal for the profession, and I sense, from having had brief encounters with them, that his caring attitude and professional approach will be carried forward by his children. I could continue on for pages, but no matter how many words I write, my sense of the loss those close to him must feel would still remain unexpressed. - Posted by: Greg Saar (Patient/Friend) on: Feb 01, 2014

Dr. Hildahl was an amazing man and Doctor and I am so saddened by this news. His chairside manner was patient, kind, and I always learned something new each visit. I remember the years he did Doctor stints at the Grand Beach medical office in the Park. It was great to see him out there helping the community. He will be missed incredibly by many many friends, staff and patients. Prayers for his Family. Rest easy Dr. Hildahl, and thank you. - Posted by: C. Chapman (decades long patient) on: Feb 01, 2014

My deepest regret, sympathy and condolences to Craig's wife and children, brothers - family and friends and those other patients. I went to see you Doc on Friday as soon as I knew you were there. I asked for you and was told you had passed. I am deeply saddened. I remember last time I saw you and I asked what would I do without you? I was somewhat worried. You have meant so much to me throughout the past 40 years or so. Since I was seventeen when I first met you. You were always so kind, considerate and respectful and intelligent! Inspiring. I thanked you for all you did and do for me... you are a truly beautiful human being. I thank your family for sharing you for so many years. A loving friend so proud to have known you - I will miss you. - Posted by: Jim La Vallee (friend, patient,) on: Feb 01, 2014
