Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY ZEBINSKI With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Zebinski (nee Kolynchuk) on Friday, January 31, 2014 in Selkirk. Mary was born in Kirkness, Manitoba on October 2, 1919 and was the fourth child of William and Annie Kolynchuk. She had three brothers and two sisters with only one sibling, her younger sister Violet, remaining alive today. She lived on the family farm in her younger days. She enjoyed a very good neighbourhood with lots of children to play with and visit. She went to Ashfield School which was one and one half miles away from home. At the age of 14 years, she quit school to help work on the farm. When their work was finished, she would work for the neighbour's, doing such things as hoeing potatoes and in the fall, picking potatoes. With the money she received, she felt very rich. Sunday was always a day of rest. However, the family usually went to visit grandmother Bogacki in Gonor. On one of her visits, she met her husband, Ted, and was married in October of 1939. They lived at her in-laws for a couple of months until they purchased property in the Springfield municipality and lived there for five years. They sold that farm and purchased another farm in the Kirkness area where they lived until Ted's passing in 1984. After that, Mary moved to live by herself in a home in Selkirk. Her husband Ted started working full-time for CNR at their Transcona Shops after the boys were big enough to help their mother. Ted worked at the CNR Shops for 24 years until his retirement in 1977. While Ted worked full-time, they also operated a small hobby farm growing potatoes, grain and other vegetables. Mary often worked for local farmers to earn extra income for the family. After the children were older, she went to work for the Selkirk General Hospital for many years eventually becoming head cook before retiring shortly after Ted retired. Mary was active at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church on Henderson Highway in Gonor. She attended mass regularly until a few years ago and was active in other church activities such as teas and bazaars. Ted is buried at the churchyard cemetery. Mary loved to garden and plant flowers in her yard in the summer. Even until recently, she tended a garden at her home in Selkirk. The marriage was blessed with three children, William (Laurel), Robert (Ida) and Richard (Ingrid). Mary has six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. As per Mary's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her church.
