JOSEPH VISKUP March 11, 1919 - February 4, 2014 It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our unique father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and local character, Joseph Viskup, at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, at the age of 94. Joseph leaves to mourn his memory, his children: Ted (Irene), Valerie, and Patsy (Harry), eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Salome, his son, Joey, and his parents, Veronica and Steve Bartos. Joe was born and raised in Straze, Slovakia. With his parents, he boldly and bravely immigrated to Canada in 1937. They soon settled and farmed in the Lorette area where Joe would meet his future bride, the lovely and the sweet, Salome Balamatowski. Together, they operated a successful grain and dairy farm and created a nurturing home for their four children. Joe was most passionate about hockey, farming, hockey, gardening, hockey, wheeling and dealing, hockey, socializing, hockey, wrestling, hockey, his independence, and of course, hockey. His family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Riverview Health Centre and Golden Links Lodge for providing such compassionate care for our dad in his most recent years. Viewing and celebration of Joe's life will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 10:15 am followed by the mass at 11:00 am at the Notre Dame de Lorette Catholic Church in Lorette, Manitoba. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Flowers are graciously declined. If you wish, please make a donation in Joe's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. • A personal memory: When Joe resided at Golden Links Lodge, he took every opportunity to work in our raised gardens. He would dismiss the trowel as an unnecessary tool for making rows to plant the seeds. You could see his smile widen as he dug his hands into the soft soil. I would joke that it looked as if he wanted to just dive in. He wasn't afraid of getting a bit of dirt under his nails. I was sorry to hear of his passing.
