SUSAN ROUGET (nee SARMATIUK) It is with profound sadness we announce the untimely passing of our precious Susan, who passed away peacefully on February 9, 2014, at St. Boniface Hospital. Susan was born in Oshawa, Ontario on February 27, 1945, and spent her youth in Winnipeg. Susan graduated in 1965 from the first Dental Hygiene class at the University of Manitoba. She spent 11 magical years in Bermuda where she met the love of her life Jean Claude, and started her family. After two years in Ste. Adele, Quebec, they returned to Winnipeg where they have had the same cozy and welcoming home for 34 years. Susan took great pride in her work as a dental hygienist, working full time until December, 2013. She will be most remembered by her family and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her for being loving, supportive and compassionate. Susan was extraordinary. Left to cherish Susan's memory are her mother Dorothy; adoring husband Jean Claude; children Renée France, Philippe (Sarah), Olivier (Lisa) and Jean Paul; grandchildren Sage, Sacha, Alexie, Leon and Julien; siblings Peter (Gwen), Martha (Tonino) and Sandy; cousins Timothy (Louise) and Lisa (Harold); many nephews and nieces; all her extended family in France, Italy, Bermuda, and the USA; lifelong best friend Lee Kohanek; and close friends Ron and Paulette Chartrand and the Leonhardt family. A celebration of Susan's life will be held on Saturday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). There are no words to express our gratitude for the unparalleled care extended to Susan, and all of us, by the caring staff of 8A Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers the family graciously suggests donations be made to the Palliative Care Endowment Fund through the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation. In Susan's usual parting words, "Love you, and leave you." NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • We just learned of Susan's passing and our hearts go out to her spouse and children. Susan grew up with my parents and later on, she became the very valued hygienist for my mom, sister and I. Susan was a beautiful person inside and out. I loved my visits to the dentist because of Susan. I will miss her infectious laugh, the way she hummed to the radio while she worked and most of all her kind and caring nature. - Posted by: Michelle Chrisp (Patient ) on: Apr 04, 2014

  • Susan was truly a sweet compassionate lady. I knew Susan from Images Dental where she was my hygienist and I have never looked forward to going to the dentist until I met Susan. She was so caring and so sweet and we had many great conversations (which is why my cleaning took 3x longer than normal) but I enjoyed every minute. You almost wanted to give her a hug by the end of the appointment because she found a way to befriend you and her warm heart and personality found a way to rub off on you. My most sincere condolences to the family! - Posted by: Bret () on: Mar 11, 2014

  • Words cannot express the profound sadness that George and I felt at hearing of the devastating news of Susan's passing. With deepest sympathy to Claude, Renee, Philippe, Olivier and her dear Mom and the rest of the family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. • Dear Jean Claude, Renee, Philippe, Olivier and family, I am so sorry for loss of your beautiful Susan. She and I shared so many stories and laughs and very cold feet at those endless soccer and hockey games so many years ago. My memories of her and the fun we had are treasures in my memory box. I will always remember Susan as kind and selfless and beautiful inside and out. I wish you all the peace in knowing that Susan will ever be remembered for her goodness. • Dear Family each and every one, My heart and prayers are with you, especially today as you say your final Good bye to your "DEAR SUSAN" Susan & I were best friends in our School of Dental Hygiene days. We took our first big holiday after graduation together to Bermuda. We had such a good time Susan decided to go there to live. Although our paths rarely crossed in the ensuing years when they did it was like we'd never been apart. The Sarmatuik family took me in as one of the family back in the day. What a kind and loving family. A HUGE Bear Hug to you Mom Sarmatuik . Heaps of Love, Lois - Posted by: Lois Howorth (Friend) on: Feb 15, 2014

  • Susan was our family's dental hygenist for 20+ years. She was such a fantastic person & I will miss her dearly! She was always smiling & that wonderful laugh of hers was contagious! So caring, genuine & compassionate. Going to the dentist won't be the same. Always worried about her patient and their families. Every 5 minutes she would ask "AM I KILLING YOU"?? She never was, always so gentle. We'll miss you Susan, you were one in a million. RIP. - Posted by: Marianne Viau (Patient/Friend) on: Feb 15, 2014

  • Dear Peter, Martha, Sandy and family, Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to you at the loss of your sister. Our mothers shared a dear and unique childhood friendship that lasted throughout the years and miles between them. Their connection was felt through our families as well and our hearts go out to all of you at this time of sorrow. May you seek comfort in the memories you cherish. • Jean Claude and family, What an incredible woman and an incredible loss for you all. I was a patient of Susan's for the past 20 years and I always said she cared more about my teeth than I did. Always upbeat, thoughtful, comforting and totally immersed my meager concerns as opposed to her own greater issues. When I spoke with her a couple of weeks back she had just learned of the primary source of her cancer 20 minutes earlier. To illustrate the spirit of this wonderful woman, her main concern during our conversation was finding me a new hygienist who would look after me the way she had. There is one less beautiful human being in this world today. - Posted by: Murray McLeod (friend/patient) on: Feb 14, 2014

  • Thank you all for your kind comments and personal observations that are a comfort to us, the family, at this time, as we contemplate our lives without Susan. Friends, colleagues, and even patients are represented here and we are so pleased but not surprised that she made an impression on people from all the paths of her life. Thank you. - Posted by: Martha Ciccocioppo (Sister) on: Feb 14, 2014

  • Susan is my forever friend, the one who knew me as a kid, was my bridesmaid, kept in touch long distance and offered me unquestioning support and kindness in my trips back to Winnipeg. She was the sister I never had, who kept in touch with my Mom, kept me up to date with news of childhood friends, and shared with me the joy of her family. Phillippe, Renee, Olivier and Jean Paul were the stars in her firmament. She was fierce in her determination that they find happiness and fulfillment in a way that best suited each of them. Jean Claude was her sun, the one to come home to, to be comforted by, and , of course, the one to love and cherish forever. forever. of ccurse. - Posted by: Sylvia Kirkpatrick (née shaw) (friend) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • Susan was an incredible person who put everyone's need before her own. She was selfless and loved her family and friends more than words can ever express. Susan could light up a room and her laughter was infectious. Her door was always open and once you stepped over that welcome mat, good times were sure to happen. I will be eternally thankful for the compassion and understanding she provided me during certain periods of my life, she was a shoulder to lean on. Susan gave Peter and I the gift of meeting each other through her match making skills as well as proposing the toast to the bride at our wedding. She held a special place in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family at this very difficult time. Peter and I will forever cherish our memories of Susan. Rest in peace dear friend. - Posted by: Cheryl Kohanek (Family friend) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • I met Susan just a few months ago when she and Sandy came to stay with us during a "Ladies' Shopping Weekend" to Seattle. We had a great time and shared many laughs. I wish that I had gotten to know her better, as she was a real beauty! Great sense of humour and she certainly fit right in the 'madness' that is our home whenever these ladies get together. Our thoughts and prayers to her family and her other friends! RIP - Posted by: Cameron C. McLEOD, Sr. (Friend) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • I went through kindergarten to grade 12 with Susan. She was the kindest, happiest, sweetest girl I ever met in all that time. She was always "up" and was a friend to everyone that ever knew her. - Posted by: Tony Dadson (Classmate) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • I had the pleasure of working with Susan at Munroe Dental Centre several years ago. Susan was such a wonderful lady and a terrific hygienist. She was a proud devoted mother and I know she will be missed. The family is in my prayers. I consider it a privilege to have known her and I was so sorry to hear of her passing. - Posted by: Edna johnson (Previous co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2014

  • I have known Susan since the family moved to Mager Drive over 60 years ago. Growing up 2 doors from her, Peter, Martha and Sandy was always fun. I went with her to her graduation from Dental Hygientistry (?) and was sad to see her go away to Bermuda, but it was a good move for her at the time and as it turned out, a great one for her as she met Claude. Upon her return to Winnipeg, we connected again and it was a joy to visit her and Claude. We will all miss her greatly, especially that smiling face and joyful laugh. - Posted by: John Brenan (Very old friend) on: Feb 12, 2014

  • Susan was a superb hygienist and a wonderful woman to chat with. I'm very glad I had the pleasure of being one of her patients for five years. I'll miss her cheerful personality. - Posted by: Carolyn Gillespie (patient) on: Feb 12, 2014

  • I am so sorry to hear of Susan's passing. I met her through her sister, Sandy, at many family celebrations. Susan was always full of fun and contributed greatly to the conversations, food and merriment in general. She was a matriarchal figure in the Sarmatiuk family and leaves big shoes to fill in that regard. It has been my pleasure to know Susan and I wish both her and her family nothing but love and peace - Posted by: Mary Jane Reid (Friend) on: Feb 12, 2014
