Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALFRED THOMPSON November 7, 1926 - February 8, 2014 With deep sorrow we announce that Alfred Thompson, at the age of 87 years, has joined his wife Margaret. Dad was born November 7, 1926. He was predeceased by his parents Stan and May, his brothers and sisters Roy, Archie, Dot and Bertha. Also, his brother and sisters-in-law, Walter, Frank, Florence, Jack and Veronica. In August 1998 Alfred lost his wife of 48 years. His son David Charles Thompson also predeceased him. He is survived by his son Archie (Viola Isfjord); his grandson Riley who was a beautiful joy to dad when he arrived. Also, step-grandchildren Lance (Victoria), Carmen (Del) and great-grandson Spenser. Alfred was raised on the homestead of his grandmother in Sylvan, MB. As he grew up on the farm he developed a very strong work ethic. As a young man, before marrying Margaret, he took his mechanical abilities and completed a mechanics course in Winnipeg, MB. Upon his return he discovered a new teacher arrived in Sylvan. She had caught the attention of Alfred and his future changed. He then pursued Margaret and they joined in love to create a life together. After marrying on July 8, 1950, Alfred and Margaret moved a quarter mile up the road from his family's homestead. In 1956 they had a son, Archie, and in 1962 adopted their son David. He possessed woodworking talents that would also serve him well throughout the years, as the house and barn he built for his family, for the most part alone except the roof, are still being used today. Alfred was passionate about farming, therefore causing him to strive to make his own farm a success. He took on odd jobs for neighbors using his talents to also bring in extra. In 1967 he worked in a garage in Arborg where a car fell on him. In addition to all the support from friends and neighbors he managed to recover. Dad also gives credit to what he called stubbornness to carry on with his family and farm after that accident. Mom and Dad were active volunteers in the community. They spent their time being involved with the ongoing activities of the Vidir hall, also as a trustee of Evergreen School Division, involved in the Vidir Ladies Aid and contributing to the making of Beyond the Marsh. His main pastime was hunting and he did dabble in curling to be with his wife. After Margaret passed away life was never the same for him. Alfred carried on with life for eight years until he became sick. He then moved into the care home in Selkirk, MB, for two years before returning to the care home in Arborg, MB, where he spent the last of his days in his community until his passing. Funeral will be held at the Vidir Church (Hall) on February 15, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. The burial will follow at Sylvan Cemetery and then we will return to the Vidir Church (Hall) for a lunch and fellowship. The family wishes to express a very heartfelt thank you to everyone who loved and supported our family throughout the years. MACKENZIE FUNERAL HOME ARBORG 204-467-2525 mackhome@mts.net
