MELVYN EDMOND CLAVEN Peacefully, after a brief and courageous battle with MDS, Mel was taken from us on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Concordia Hospital at the age of 73 years. Left to lovingly remember Mel are his wife Gaylene of 43 years of marriage; two children Dean and Stacy (Cameron); and the lights of his life, grandchildren Madison, age 16 and Liam, age 7. Mel was known by his family and friends as a man who invested his whole being into relationships. He was the successful owner and operator of Speedee Mart Food Stores along with several other businesses, before switching careers to include shoe and car sales. Along this path, he met many people and touched the lives of them in his easygoing, kind and gentle way. Mel loved animals, prided himself on his garden but most of all, spending time doing any activity that included his family and friends. He was a generous soul who believed his role on this earth was to improve the lives of those he cared for, in whatever way he was capable of. He will be sadly missed by many. A Celebration of Mel's Life will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Anavets Assiniboia, Unit 283 - 3584 Portage Avenue. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ormiston and the nurses and Health Care Aides at Concordia Hospital, who showed Mel and his family genuine care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aplastic Anemia & Myelodysplasia Association of Canada. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I knew Mel for most of my life . When I was younger and going into his Speedee Mart on Tyndall , as a young adult hanging out with his children , to being great friends with each other . Mel was not only one of the greatest friends I could have, but also a mentor. He had a great knowledge of business . Mel treated his friends like family , and his home was like your home. If he was capable , he would do anything for you. Mel was a very generous person who liked different foods , some of which I may not have experienced to this day. Mel was so enjoyable to be around , I would visit him whenever possible . I would visit him at his home or work , have coffee , breakfast ,lunch , and dinner with him . He enjoyed friends visiting and would request their company. Mel also believed there were no bad children , they were just being children . He always gave everyone the benefit of a doubt. Mel is a big part of who I am today. It would be nice to have one more coffee with you Mel . Yes , I will get it myself and Yes while I'm up I'll get you one too ! With lots of love, I will miss you Mel . Mitch and Family - Posted by: Mitch (Friend) on: Feb 18, 2014
