EARL KEITH ROUTLEY February 8, 1932 - February 20, 2014 Earl Keith Routley, age 82, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2014 with family by his side. Keith was predeceased by his grandson, Steven Andrew Hurst, parents Ernest and Nellie, sister Beryl Watts, and nephew Kipp Watts. Keith is survived by wife Doreen, son David (Sharon), daughter Karen (Donald Hurst), son Greg (Maureen), sister Queade (Harold Anderson) and brother Bruce (Anne). He is also survived by grandchildren Scott (Sandi), Heather, Samantha (Ryan Kariakis), Sarah (Derick Selinger), Katryn "Katie", as well as great-grandchildren Braden, Sophia and Lucas and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Keith and Doreen met in Winnipeg, and Keith followed Doreen to Edmonton to be married. Returning to Winnipeg, Keith became a journeyman carpenter and enjoyed sharing his skills and knowledge with others throughout his life, in particular his family and Kildonan United Church alongside his good friend Bernie Drysdale. Keith worked with Central Mortgage and Housing in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Regina and Thunder Bay. Upon his return to Winnipeg, he worked for a time at his trade and then with the Department of Labour, Apprenticeship Branch where he worked with carpentry and bricklaying apprentices. Upon his retirement, Keith pursued his passion of genealogy, moved with his wife Doreen to Medicine Hat for her work where he renovated their house, and upon returning to Winnipeg once more, devoted hours upon hours helping his family and church with their construction projects. A devoted son, Keith spent countless hours with his mother and the other residents of Kildonan Personal Care Home and often expressed how his interactions with the residents (his friends) brought him great joy. The family would like to express its sincere thanks for the outstanding care received from the staff and volunteers at CancerCare Manitoba, the Manitoba Palliative Care Program and the Riverview Health Centre. We would also like to thank the Kildonan United Church family for the loving care and support provided to Keith and his family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Keith's memory may be made to Kildonan United Church, 187 Kilbride Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2V 0Z7, Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4, or to a charity of your choice. A service celebrating Keith's life will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., at Kildonan United Church, Reverends Mark Satterly and Earl Gould co-officiating. Dear Lord, in the battle that goes on through life I ask but a field that is fair, A chance that is equal with all in the strife, A courage to strive and to dare. And if I should win, let it be by the code With my faith and my honour held high; And if I should lose, let me stand by the road, And cheer as the winners go by. - Berton Braley www.seasonsfunerals.ca

  • It was 1977 -- I was newly divorced, a single mother and scared. Keith and Doreen came to my home in BC and, while I was at work, fixed every dripping tap, replaced every burnt out bulb and ensured that all of the appliances were working well. • He, and the Routley family, introduced me to BBQs and potato salad, things we didn't have in Scotland at that time. I hung out at the Routley's on Southall Drive for quite a bit of my teen years and certainly knew them from Kildonan United. I always found Keith to be fair-minded, informative and welcoming and he had a keen sense of humour, and no time for slackers. I found his courage and determination throughout his cancer treatments to be a guiding light throughout my own, and he continues to be so. I learned a lot from my association with Keith, and indeed from the whole family and their relatives. Your light in our memories will never dim, Keith. Safe passage. - Posted by: Ishbel Moore (Friend of the family) on: Feb 21, 2014

  • Keith was there for me back in the early 70's as a carpenter app. He made sure the employers treated us right and I appreciated his support when I needed him to straighten out some issues with my employers. I went on to be a Journeyman Carpenter and will remember him. May God bless and comfort his family at this time. 2 Corinthians 1 verses 3&4 - Posted by: Jim Anderson (Past Apprentice) on: Feb 21, 2014

  • So sorry to hear that Keith has lost his long and brave battle. His mom was my mom's neighbour at Kildonan Personal Care Home, and quite often her "chauffeur". Now they will all be dining together. God Bless. - Posted by: Maureen Karbonik (Kuzina) (friend) on: Feb 21, 2014

  • Sincere Sympathy Doreen to you and your family - Posted by: Joyce Ramsay (Friend and co-worker of Doreen at The Canadian Grain Commission) on: Feb 21, 2014
