DAVID GUNNAR TOMASSON 1945 - 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of David Tomasson. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, David died peacefully with his family at his side on Friday, February 14, 2014. David was predeceased by his parents Helga and Helgi Tomasson as well as his brother Helgi (Tommy). He will be lovingly remembered by his son Franklin, daughter-in-law Corinne, grandchildren Erik and Kristin, sister Margaret, nephew David (Kelly), niece Stacey (Ove) and their children, as well as niece Kimberley (Dusan). He will also be missed by special friend Suava; Brian, Lyla and family; Jim, Linda and family; Keith and Joan, as well as numerous family and friends. David grew up as the youngest of three children on Hecla Island, Manitoba. He attended Hecla School up to Grade 10 and then attended school in Gimli and Selkirk. David graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Arts and then completed his Masters Degree in Natural Resources Management at the University of Manitoba, which became the focus of his life both personally and professionally. He loved the outdoors and fishing and hunting were a passion. David worked for the Government of Manitoba for over 23 years. He started as an economic development analyst with the Department of Natural Resources, and he later served as Deputy Minister in Northern Affairs and Native Affairs, Energy and Mines and Rural Development. He was self-employed as an Economic Development consultant and a commercial fisher on Lake Winnipeg. Later he served as the Chairperson at Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation, Chair and member of the Freshwater Regional Harbour Authority Advisory Committee as well as Director and member of the Hecla Village Harbour Authority, Central and Arctic Region, and member of the National Harbour Authority Advisory Committee. Last year he was proud to receive the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal which is presented to volunteers who have shown extraordinary dedication to Canada. David loved being at Hecla and enjoyed visiting with his many friends. He always took the time to listen and talk to people and he had a wonderful sense of humour which entertained us all. The family wishes to thank the staff at Health Sciences Centre as well as his doctors for their compassion and care. Also thanks to the many friends and family that came by to visit and for their kind thoughts. Funeral services will be held on March 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., Winnipeg. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Margaret and I send our sympathies to all your family and relations . We had hoped to see all of you today but weather has a way of changing plans. We talk about your hunting trips often and were hoping to see you at Hecla again this summer. We will miss your laugh and our political discussions. - Posted by: Evan & Margaret Smith (Long time friends at the happy hunting farm at Rivers) on: Mar 07, 2014

The staff members of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours (SCH) Program in Ottawa were profoundly saddened to hear of David’s passing. Many of us were privileged to meet and work with David when he was a member and Chair of the Freshwater Regional Harbour Authority Advisory Committee. David was a pillar of both the Freshwater Committee and the National Harbour Authority Advisory Committee, and a mentor to many. His sound advice was sought by commercial fishers and SCH Program staff alike. He was highly respected and was appreciated for his inclusive perspective. His diplomacy and collaborative spirit, coupled with his wonderful sense of humour will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Kaye Love on behalf of Small Craft Harbours National Headquarters staff (Business/friendship) on: Feb 27, 2014

I remember the early days when you and Helgi took me with you, commercial fishing on Lake Winnipeg, to the days when you were Deputy Minister. Your passion for the resource and Hecla were never in question. The conversation and discussions we had were something I will always cherish. Thanks for the memories! Condolences to the family! - Posted by: Cam Hurst () on: Feb 25, 2014

David was a truly amazing man ~ an inspiring, dedicated crusader whose cup was never just “half-full”, but always brimming over ~ because he chose Life and a positive outlook with every fibre of his being, on a daily basis. I am very grateful our lives intersected during his 3+ years as Freshwater's Board Chairman. What a gift he was ~ I will miss that wonderful welcoming smile ~ he was "Courage" personified. Rest in peace David ~ you will always be held close in heart and memory by all, dearly missed and deeply loved. - Posted by: Sandi Cain (Friend and great admirer) on: Feb 24, 2014

David was a long time friend and we will all miss him very much. Linda felt his friendship to be more like that of an uncle and she remembers him as always with a smile and a cheery word. David's interest in fishing was always a great topic for a conversation and he was of immense help to us while he served in government, we will all miss you David. May you rest in peace. - Posted by: Carl and Anne and Linda Monkman (Friend of David and the Family) on: Feb 23, 2014

When the Island Lake Tribal Council first opened it's door 30 some years ago, Dave and I were the first employees. He was the ED and I was the receptionist, etc. I remember fondly his love for laughter and could still hear him. My condolences to the Tomasson family at this time. - Posted by: Laurie Wood Ducharme (Friend) on: Feb 22, 2014

Please accept my sincere sympathies with respect to Mr. Tomasson's passing. I've knonw David for many years, having met him at Helgi and Helga's home on Hecla back in the early 80s. I had the very distinct pleasure of dealing with David in his capacity as Deputy Minister of the Department of Natural Resources in the mid 90s. He always had a warm handshake extended to me when we met. RIP Mr. Tomasson! You and Helgi will fish the big lake together for eternity! - Posted by: André Desrosiers (Long time acquaintance.) on: Feb 22, 2014
