GERALD (JERRY) JOSEPH GALLIPEAU
Date of Passing: Feb 25, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGERALD (JERRY) JOSEPH GALLIPEAU May 23, 1924 - February 25, 2014 It is with much sadness we announce the passing of Jerry Gallipeau at Grace Hospital after a brief decline in health. Jerry will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his two children, Shell (Chuck), and Denley (Diane), his grandchildren, Adam (Lisa), Cara (Neil), Brynne (Colin), Jamie and Jeremey, great-grandchildren, Liam, Aiden and Ella, sister-in-law Yvonne, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Trudy, and mother Sarah. Jerry was born and raised in Almonte, Ontario and regaled family with tales of pre-war, small town life, strapping on skates to play hockey on an outdoor rink, delivering groceries on bicycle, and working in a butter plant before joining the war effort in 1943 at age 19. He was a proud Air Force Veteran having served overseas in the Second World War, on the Korean Airlift, and had flown across our great Canadian North. It was while stationed in Churchill that he met and married Trudy in Winnipeg in 1948. Thus began an odyssey that saw his family at postings in Edmonton, Quebec, Goose Bay, Labrador, and overseas in England and France before returning to Canada in 1963 to settle in Winnipeg. A certified Load Master with Air Transport, Jerry received the Canadian Volunteer Medal, Korea Medal, United Nations Service Medal, among others for his years of service but it was as a volunteer that he left his mark with 17 Wing. Whether with his buddies as a Deputy Commander of the Ghost Squadron working on vintage aircraft, or his over 7,000 volunteer hours at the Kit Shop, Jerry was honoured in a surprise ceremony by Canadian Air Div/CANR when the newly renovated Kit Shop was rededicated as the "Gallipeau Kit Shop." An avid storyteller, Jerry, with a twinkle in his eye, was quick to pull out his log book, a place from which his many R.C.A.F. stories would take flight. Dad treasured his time with family and held a special place in his heart for grandchildren and the new generation of great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank all the staff on 3 South at the Grace Hospital for their kind care. Viewing will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Roman Catholic Church, 2235 Silver Avenue off Wihuri Road, formerly Whytewold Road with Father Lauden Orio officiating. A reception will follow the interment at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jerry's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. I am so sorry to hear about Gerry's passing and would like to express my deepest condolences to his family. He was a sweet, kind and gentle soul with a twinkle in his eye and always a smile on his face. I really enjoyed hearing his stories and seeing some of his old RCAF pictures he used to have on him when he was working at the 1 CAD Kit Shop. He volunteered a lot of his time and it was such an appropriate tribute when the Kit Shop was named and dedicated to him. I have missed seeing him since he left our building. He was a wonderful man. I would often see him at the RC Chapel at the base as well. I'm sure he is now sharing all those wonderful stories up in Heaven. Rest in peace, Gerry. - Posted by: Natalie Moore (Friend) on: Mar 28, 2014

I have known Jerry for several years having watched him as a volunteer at the kit shop at 1 CAD since my return there in 1999. Jerry was always happy to sit down and tell tales and how things have changed. I was the HQ Chief when the kit shop was dedicated to him. He was so fond of Donna Pelchat who was the Steward who did all the work to dedicate the room to him. Jerry has not been around for quite some time and he was certainly missed. I will always have a special in my heart for Jerry. Rest in Peace my friend! - Posted by: Bernie Verreault (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2014
