JOAN HAYHURST It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joan Hayhurst on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 with her daughters and granddaughter Brianna by her side. Joan was predeceased by her husband Tom in 1984, and her longtime companion Gene West in 2008. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Shirley Kuentzle (Steve), three children, Chris, Brianna (Paulo) and Landon (Josey), daughter Julie Gilmore, two children, Cameron and Alyssa, brother-in-law Pete and (Mary) Hayhurst, nieces and nephews and her family in England, Roy and Doreen Croft. Mom was born in Bexhill, England on February 26, 1929. In 1957, Mom and Dad left England to start a new life in Winnipeg. Joan lived in Charleswood for many years until she moved to Wabagoon, ON to be with her companion Gene until his passing in 2008. Following Genes passing, Joan moved back to Manitoba to be with her family. Once in Wabagoon, Mom became involved in the local church and community club and also volunteered in the gift shop in Dryden Hospital. Joan was quite involved in her daughter's activities while they were growing up; Brownies, Guides and Job's Daughters. Mom's hobbies were knitting, embroidery, sewing, gardening, puzzles and she was a member of Eastern Star and the Legion. Mom loved feeding the birds and enjoyed fishing with Gene. Her love of gardening and birds continued when she moved back to Manitoba. We would like to thank Boundary Trails and Carman Hospital and especially Boyne Lodge for their care and compassion with our mom. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations can be made to Canadian Diabetes and St. Boniface Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Starbuck MB. A private family graveside service at Chapel Lawn will be held that day. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

I just found out about "Auntie Joan"'s passing today. My heart, thoughts and hugs go out to Shirley, Julie and their families. Auntie Joan got me watching Coronation Street when she used to babysit me. Apparently I had a strong English accent as a child because of my time I spent with her. God Bless ya, Auntie Joan! Thank you for taking care of me. I'll never forget you and you'll always have a special place in my heart! xoxoxoxoxo - Posted by: Conni Kroeger (family friend) on: Mar 08, 2014

I am missing Joan so much. She was a wonderful lady. I so appreciated getting to know her and take care of her in her last days. We had a close relationship. I remember how regardless of the day or night, she would be singing away...about hot tea or whatever. She was so sweet and always had such a positive outlook on her day. The last day I saw her, I had tucked her into bed and she was soooo cozy. She had a big smile on her face and she said "I am so comfy". Sweetheart. Loved her. Hope that she had prepared for eternity by trusting in the death of Jesus Christ for her salvation. The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23 Will continue praying for you through this time of loss. - Posted by: Bethany B (Health Care Aide at Boyne Lodge) on: Mar 05, 2014

I was privileged to have met Joan twice on travels to Canada. Someone to share my vegemite with. What a wonderful woman, mother and grandmother she was to her loved ones. May she rest in glorious peace, free from pain and discomfort. Thinking of Julie, Shirley and children in their loss. - Posted by: Robyn Zylstra, Western Australia (long-time pen friend of Joan's daughter, Julie) on: Mar 03, 2014

We are very saddened to hear about the passing of Joan. Growing up my sisters and I referred to her as our Auntie Joan. Our parents both worked and Joan looked after us throughout our early preschool and elementary school years. She was a wonderful caring woman who always had time for us. I have lots of fond memories of growing up across the street from the Hayhursts. We spent a lot of time there - so much so that I think my younger sister even picked up a bit of an English accent before she started school. Rest in peace Joan, you will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies to Shirley and Julie and their extended families. Howard Kroeger - Posted by: Howard Kroeger (Family friend & former neighbor) on: Mar 02, 2014

Memories of the best sponge cake that "Auntie Joan' would make while looking after us so many years ago. I used to just love her Jam and cream fillings in that cake and still to this day think of her whenever I eat something similar :) To Shirley and Julie and families, we send our deepest condolences and wish Dennis and I could be there to 'celebrate her life' together with you. Just know that thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Dennis and Brenda - Posted by: Brenda Reimer (Friend of the Family) on: Mar 02, 2014
