CAPTAIN ROBERT DOUGLAS SHINNIE November 28, 1933 - February 26, 2014 Robert (Bob) Shinnie passed away peacefully at the Stonewall Hospital surrounded by his loving family on February 26, 2014 at the age of 80 years. Bob is survived by his loving wife Shirley; precious children Jennifer, Joneen (Doug), Wanda (Glenn), Cindy (Andre), Steven (Maria); dearly loved grandchildren, Andrew, Christine (Kenny), Jenifer, Heather (Sid), Cory (Marilla), Eric, Mark, and six great-grandchildren. Dad / Grampa was extremely proud and supportive of his family and all their accomplishments. He is also survived by his brothers Ron (Marlene), John (Helen); in-laws Joyce, Johnny (Shirley-Ann), Darlene (Elert), Carol (Wilfred), Lorraine (Lorne), Shirley (Morley); numerous other relatives and friends. Bob was born in St. Boniface. From an early age Bob's life ambition and passion was to be a pilot. His pursuit of a career in aviation began at the age of 12 when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets where he obtained his pilot license on a scholarship. Bob was a bush pilot for 22 years (1951 to 1973) and for many years was the chief pilot for Lambair mentoring other pilots. He was then a commercial airline pilot for 20 years (1973 to 1993) flying for Transair, Pacific Western and Canadian Airlines. In his later years, he devoted his spare time to family, golfing and lawn bowling. He was proud to represent Manitoba in seven national lawn bowling competitions and served as Chief Umpire of the Manitoba Lawn Bowling Association for several years. He was also happy to volunteer in the community. In all his years, he was a person who could fix everything and nothing stumped him. He enjoyed the time spent with his many friends. A special thanks to the doctors and caregivers who helped us care for Dad in the last few years. In keeping with Dad's wishes, a private family gathering will be held to honour his life. In Dad's memory take a few moments to think of the joy and laughter he brought to your life. We love you and will miss you always. MACKENZIE FUNERAL HOME STONEWALL 204-467-2525 mackhome@mts.net

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • To the family of Bob Shinnie My sincerest sympathies to you all. I was stunned to find Bob’s name in the RAPCAN (Retired Airline Pilots of Canada) notice. Bob and I have had no contact for many years. I think the last time we met was at an Air Cadet reunion several years ago, but our friendship was a major component of earlier years and I have since followed his activities whenever possible. Just last week I was looking for his name in the list of attendees at a recent meeting of RAPCAN in Winnipeg and attributed its absence to the current brutal weather. Bob and I were best friends all through our school years, starting in Grade 1 at Greenway School, through General Wolfe and then DMCI. We did many things together from bicycling around Winnipeg to chasing girls. I remember being in his Alverstone Street home many times. Later, we were in Air Cadets together. Somehow Bob was eligible for Air Cadet flight training a year before I was but we flew together many times out of the Winnipeg Flying Club. One flight in particular stands out when we flew in a ski equipped Cessna 140 out to my uncle’s farm south of Neepawa one winter afternoon before Christmas in 1950. In the fading light, we were attracted to bright lights that turned out to be a big civic Christmas tree in Minnedosa and, not able find the Neepawa Airport out there, we had to make a precautionary landing in a field south of the town before darkness fell. As I recall, we were welcomed in for the night at a farmhouse. After digging out the next morning, we got back to our intended destination for a visit. In defense of Bob’s navigation, the Neepawa Airport beacon that we missed was on my side of the airplane. Bob’s flying career took off in a different direction to mine and I certainly hope he has recorded all the stories of his Northern Manitoba life. I was around the Winnipeg Flying Club for four more years before my first flying job with Canadian Pacific Air Lines. We both finished as pilots with Canadian Airlines in 1993. In an interesting twist, I began lawn bowling ten years ago and started umpiring just last year. I doubt if I will ever become a competitive bowler, certainly not at the National or even Provincial level, but I enjoy the game very much and the story of Bob’s success as a bowler only adds to my admiration of the varied aspects of his life. Rest in Peace, Bob. FLYING WEST * I hope there's a place, way up in the sky, Where pilots can go, when they have to die. A place where a guy can buy a cold beer For a friend and a comrade, whose memory is dear; A place where no doctor or lawyer can tread , Nor a management type would ere be caught dead; Just a quaint little place, kind of dark, full of smoke, Where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke; The kind of a place where a lady could go And feel safe and protected, by the men she would know. There must be a place where old pilots go, When their paining is finished, and their airspeed gets low, Where the whiskey is old, and the women are young, And songs about flying and dying are sung, Where you'd see all the fellows who'd flown west before, And they'd call out your name, as you came through the door. Who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad, And relate to the others, "He was quite a good lad!" And then through the mist, you'd spot an old guy You had not seen in years, though he taught you to fly. He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear; And say, "Welcome, my son, I'm pleased that you're here." "For this is the place where true flyers come," "When their journey is over, and the war has been won." "They've come here at last to be safe and alone" "From the government clerks and the management clone," "Politicians and lawyers, the Feds and the noise," "Where all hours are happy, and these good ole boys" "Can relax with a cool one, and a well deserved rest;" "This is heaven, my son You've passed your last test!"
