ROBERT BRIGGS It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our much loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Left to celebrate his memory are his beloved wife of 59 years, Marjorie, daughters Kathy (Bruce) and Terry (John), grandsons Darryl (Anna and Eva), Kyle (Jory), Adam (Jaclyn), Michael (Kristi), and granddaughters Lana (Kurtis) and Brandi (Scott), great-granddaughters Ayla and Hadleigh, sister Helen, Brother-in-law Gordon (Elsie), sisters-in-law Kay, Mary, Marg (Percy), Marie, Mary and Millie. He was predeceased by his brothers Lorne and Gerald and sisters Grace and Norma. Bob was born August 28, 1932 on a farm in Cayuga, near Dunnville, Ontario to Lawrence and Margery Briggs. He was the youngest in a family of six children. The family moved to town (Dunnville) when he was quite young but he loved to spend his weekends back on the farm with his favourite Aunt Luella and Uncle Clarence. He could hardly wait for school to be over so he could get to the farm even though he had to bike 10 miles to get there. As a teenager, Bob enjoyed his first job working at the bakery in Dunnville. However, because times were tough, he availed an opportunity to have a career by joining the R.C.A.F. in 1951 as a Firefighter. His time in the military became his way of life and it afforded him travel across Canada and abroad. His first posting took him to the Arctic community of Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island and Goose Bay, Labrador. Next, he went to Rockcliffe (Ottawa) where he met and married his beloved bride and life partner, Marjorie. They were stationed to Marville, France, Moose Jaw, Sask, Camp Borden, Ontario, (a second posting to Moose Jaw) Kapuskasing, Ontario, Winnipeg and the final posting in Portage la Prairie. Bob retired from the forces in 1978 as a Warrant Officer after serving for 27 years. For the next 15 years he worked as a Firefighter at the Winnipeg International Airport retiring in the fall of 1992. Bob and his wife spent many years of their retirement travelling from coast to coast and across the border, camping in their motorhome and they have many happy memories of these times. In 2011 they moved into Kiwanis Assisted Living home because of Bob's failing health due to COPD. Bob passed away peacefully, in his sleep at home. Bob was a kind and friendly man, a true gentleman with a delightful sense of humour that was good for a chuckle at any time. He was loved by all who knew him. The world will not be the same without him and Heaven is happy to receive him as he goes to meet his Lord and saviour. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service at a later date. Burial will be in the Tupper Cemetery in Plumas, MB. The Briggs family would like to extend their thanks to the Manager and staff of Metropolitan Kiwanis for all their support during this stressful time. To my Bob Softly in the evening you heard a gentle call, you took the hand God offered you and quietly left us all. God's garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. God knew you were in pain and never get well again. He saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb, He closed your weary eyelids and whispered peace be thine. It broke our hearts to lose you but you didn't go alone, for parts of me went with you, the day God called you home. The pain is over Bob. Love and always yours. Marge. • Belated condolences. Sorry we never had a chance to meet in recent years. Kathy and/or Terry feel free to contact me if you're so inclined. - Posted by: Robert McLaughlin (relative) on: Oct 17, 2014

  • I had the great privilege of knowing Mr. and Mrs. Briggs through their daughter Terri. I remember spending time with them on many occasions when Mr. Briggs would play the Guitar and sing with that famous twang and sound! Loved it! I remember how meticulous he was with keeping his cars shining brightly. Terri had her first son Darrell whom Grandpa and Grandma adored, as I did. Terri moved to B.C. and our lives went different paths, but on occasion when she came home I would see her and her parents. They all remain in my heart as very special people and the loss of Mr. Briggs will be very heavy on their hearts. Thinking of you all, God Bless. - Posted by: Karen G. • as an airforce brat myself lived on the same base as they did but years before, Terri and I reminisced about the travels and sometimes how tough it was to be an airforce brat.
